Deutschland Tour - 2.2Germany, May 31-June 6, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 6 - June 5: Kulmbach - Oberwiesenthal, 180 kmSinkewitz seals the dealStage win revenge for ManceboBarring incident on Sunday's final stage of the Tour of Germany, young Patrik Sinkewitz (Quick.Step-Davitamon) sealed the deal for the overall victory by marking all of his rivals and crossing the line in third place on Saturday's tough climbing stage. Sinkewitz belied his young age, looking relaxed and downplaying the pressure of his yellow jersey in the midst of constant attacks from those threatening his Tour of Germany title. After defeat at the hands of Sinkewitz in the race's other mountain test in stage 3, Francisco Mancebo (Illes Balears-Banesto) got his own revenge with victory on Saturday. The race's only mountaintop finish also provoked a number of changes in the general classification. Jens Voigt (Team CSC) jumped from fifth to second overall, while his compatriot and rival Jan Ullrich (T-Mobile) slipped to seventh in the standings, unable to hold the wheels through the final series of attacks and accelerations to Oberwiesenthal. Ullrich rode well and limited the damage, but showed himself to still be a bit short when it comes to top racing form. Liberty Seguros' Jan Hruska dropped a step on the podium, now in third place overall. Sinkewitz also solidified his lead in the climber's competition, making it a double jersey race for the young German. How it unfoldedAnother cold, wet day greeted the remaining riders in the peloton as they set off for 180 kilometres between Kulmbach and Oberwiesenthal, including a foray into the Czech Republic. On a constantly rolling parcours, featuring an early Cat. 2 climb, a Cat. 3 climb mid-stage, and a back to back Cat. 2 climb and mountaintop finish to finish, it was no surprise that the early break of the day got an early start. After just seven kilometres, a group of 12 riders went clear. In the group were the following: Darius Baranowski (Liberty Seguros), Addy Engels (Bankgiroloterij), Ralf Grabsch and Lars Wackernagel (Team Wiesenhof), Ryan Cox (Team Barloworld), René Haselbacher and Torsten Schmidt (Gerolsteiner), Michael Sanstod (Team CSC), Steffen Radochla (Illes Balears-Banesto), Lubor Tesar (Ed' System-ZVVZ), Francesco Secchiari (Domina Vacanze), and stage 4 winner Sébastien Hinault (Crédit Agricole). The big group quickly established a gap and steadily built a lead of up to seven minutes throughout the rolling portion between the first two categorised climbs. A number of counter-attacks followed suit, including a move featuring policemen for T-Mobile (Steinhauser) and Liberty Seguros (Nozal), though they failed to make contact with the early break. Hinault took the early sprints, while Tesar tried to reclaim some of the mountain points he scored early in the race, crossing the first summits ahead of Cox. For such a large group, the leaders worked well together to build their advantage, but with the approach of the final phase of the stage, beginning with the Cat. 2 Marianska climb, the cooperation quickly disappeared. Haselbacher was one of the first to attack before the early slopes, followed closely by Baranowski and Secchiari. Cox and Grabsch tried to attach themselves to the move, but repeated accelerations from Baranowski and Secchiari shed the rest of the group. The two persisted with their attack as the climb steepened but Baranowski knew he was the stronger of the two. Despite a dropped chain, which he casually replaced by hand without missing a beat, Baranowski accelerated back to Secchiari's side and powered straight past, committing himself to a long solo effort to the finish. The break's gap over the main field had dropped to 3'20 at the start of the climb, but Baranowski handily stretched his own advantage back to nearly four minutes after dumping his companions. The Quick.Step team of race leader Sinkewitz set a steady tempo in the field, with Italian champion Paolo Bettini and Jurgen Van Goolen leading the charge and steadily reeling in the remnants of the original 12 man break. T-Mobile also contributed to the effort, with both Jan Ullrich and Andreas Klöden looking comfortable in the steadily dwindling group. As Baranowski crossed the summit of the Marianska, his lead had fallen to two minutes. The chase, meanwhile, steadily picked up steam through a series of accelerations in the nervous yellow jersey group. Onto the penultimate rise, a small climb back to the German border, a series of attacks from the likes of Evgeni Petrov (Saeco), Mancebo, and Voigt thinned out the favourites' group while eating into the gap built by Baranowski, who had been away since the seven kilometre mark. With barely 40" in hand at the start of the final climb, Baranowski's day was as good as over. Voigt began the serious hostilities, dramatically lifting the pace and briefly getting a gap as he caught a short move by Rabobank's Pieter Weening and Massimiliano Gentili of Domina Vacanze. Sinkewitz, able to match every acceleration, marked Voigt as his most dangerous rival and show no signs that he would crack on the last big test of this tour. Baranowski was caught up and swept out the back of the group in the midst of the constant attacks and counters, and the repeated changes in rhythm made Jan Ullrich another casualty of the group. Ullrich kept his steady tempo and together with several other riders nearly caught the lead group once more. Sensing the right moment, Weening launched his strongest attack yet and succeeded in breaking clear of the remaining eight leaders. The favourites were briefly content to let him go, though Voigt kept an infernal pace at the front of the group in an effort to crack the young Sinkewitz, who today had all the answers. Weening was pulled back, but he tried a last ditch effort once more under the red kite of one kilometre to go. This move didn't last long, and the leaders set themselves up for the finish. With Mancebo pulling at the front, a small gap of a few bike lengths opened, though the Illes Balears rider didn't have the intention of attacking. A glance over his shoulder, however, was all it took to prompt him to take advantage and he danced away from the rest, riding all out for the finish. Voigt dug deep to pull him back, hoping for the stage win and the valuable time bonus, but Mancebo had just enough time to raise his arms on the line as the group caught up behind. Success for the Spaniard, and a similar gesture of elation from third placed Sinkewitz, who crossed the line on Voigt's wheel knowing he had wrapped up his first major tour. Sunday's final stage should provide a ceremonial finish and give the sprinters one last chance to shine as the tour concludes with 170km of racing between Chemnitz and Leipzig.
