8th Tour of Japan - 2.5Japan, May 23-30, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - May 26: Special Circuit in Japan Cycle Sports Center, Shuzenji, 120kmEx-Kelme rider Lozano wins hard stageBy Miwako Sasaki, Japan Cycle Sports Spanish rider Roberto Lozano (ex-Kelme, now with Etxeondo) showed his ability in Japan today by winning a tough, hilly third stage of the Tour of Japan. Lozano turned pro with Kelme-Costa Blanca in 2001 and won the Circuito de Getxo last year. But the 26 year old rider joined Japanese Team Etxeondo this year as didn't receive a new contract with Kelme. A breakaway of six riders, including Allan Iacuone (Giant Asia Racing Team), Miguel Luis Peńa (Team Etxeondo) and the leader jersey's teammate Koki Shimbo (Aisan Ind. Racing Team) rode away in the second lap in hot weather, and the peloton kept the gap at 2'30 until five laps to go when the breakaway was caught. Yasutaka Tashiro (Team Bridgestone Anchor), Lozano and his Teammate, Peńa and Franco Sebastien accelerated from the peloton with the other favourites, and the first group became about 25 riders at two laps to go. Green Leader Jersey Takumi Beppu (Aisan Ind. Racing Team) was also there. The weather changed to cloudy and rain started to fall. Lozano wanted to attack the first group, as he is fourth on GC, 19 seconds behind Beppu now. But he and his teammate couldn't do it, and finally Lozano finished only 3 seconds ahead of the Green Jersey. "The level of Japanese cycling is higher than I thought," said stage winner Lozano. "I couldn't win without my team's work today." Lozano very happy when he finished the race, and he hugged his teammate as if he was waiting for a victory after he was fired from Kelme. "The media said I am only a one day leader, but I was confident to keep my jersey," race leader Beppu said after the stage. "I think the parcours suited me, but when I competed here once before, I couldn't follow the first group and finished 13th. I had regretted it. And my home town is near from here." It is the second rest day tomorrow,as the race moves to Motegi, where the fourth stage will be held on Friday. It's a motor racing circuit and suited to the sprinters, so the GC shouldn't change there. Australian National Team ReportBy Brian Stephens, Australian Under 23 Team Manager Today's stage of the Tour of Japan was around the Shuzenji circuit and is reputed to be the toughest of the tour. The course winds around the hills surrounding the keirin school and cycling centre and there is not a flat or straight piece of road to be seen. The race was over 15 laps of 8km. The pace was solid early then eased before building through the second half of the stage. The final laps were frantic with the field splitting to pieces. David Betts was again out best in 14th place with Spaniard Lozano Robert winning for his Etxeondo team. PhotographyImages by Miwako Sasaki/Japan Cycle Sports
