Stage 2 - May 24: Todaiji Temple - Nunome Dam Circuit, Nara, 146.2km

Beppu takes over

By Miwako Sasaki, Cycle Sports Japan

Japanese rider Takumi Beppu (Aisan Ind. Racing Team) had taken the second stage of the 8th Tour of Japan and also took over the green leader's jersey after overnight leader Mariusz Wiesiak finished the race 5'26 behind Beppu.

About 30 riders, including green jersey Wiesiak, made the front group on the hilly circuit in Nara. 13 riders jumped clear from the group with 73 km to go, and Wiesiak couldn't follow. Team Nippo's Satoshi Hirose attacked from the first group at 24 km to go, and Beppu and Shinichi Fukushima (Team Bridgestone Anchor) followed him. On the final hill to the finish, Beppu was the strongest of the three riders, finishing ahead of Fukushima and Hirose. Beppu took the points blue jersey too.

Shinri Suzuki (Shimano Racing) took the red mountains jersey today, and Masamichi Yamamoto (Shimano Racing) still wears the yellow sprints jersey as there was no sprint competition today. This means that all the leaders jerseys are worn by Japanese riders - a historic moment for the Tour of Japan.

It is a rest day tomorrow, because the race transfers to Shuzenji, where the third stage will be held on Wednesday on a hilly circuit.

Australian National Team Report

By Brian Stephens, Australian Under 23 Team Manager

Stage 2 of the Tour of Japan turned out to be a pretty tough one. Held over 12 laps of a 10km undulating circuit outside of Nara, the race was on from the gun. The first big split saw 35 riders get clear including Aaron Kemps, David Betts and Ashley Humbert for the Australian team. This group split further and initially included Ashley but David clawed his way over alone with four laps remaining. The group split further with three Japanese riders getting away and fighting out the win. David was our best finishing 12th.
