2nd Captech Classic - NEUSA, May 8, 20042003 Results Results Past Winners Monex in the money with McCauleyVan Gilder beats GaggioliBy Ray Easterling Gordon McCauley (Monex) won the men's race of the Captech Classic, beating his breakaway companions Juan Jose Haedo (Colavita Olive Oil) and Richmond-native Erik Saunders (Ofoto-Lombardi Sports) on a hilly, two kilometre course in downtown Richmond, Virginia. The three had lapped the field and were contesting the final sprint with the peloton. Saunders was well setup for the finishing sprint by his Ofoto team, only to get tangled with Robbie Ventura (USPS/Berry Floor) as they both moved for an opening on the right of the straightaway. The hilly circuit and blistering pace decimated the field, with a quarter of the field sitting on the sidelines after just 10 of 48 laps completed. Many riders took shots at making breaks early but to no avail. Then, with 37 laps remaining, McCauley made what looked to be a suicidal move, heading out on his own for a long solo effort. McCauley was able to stay ahead of a chase group of seven and the remainder of the field for several laps. The Jelly Belly team eventually helped bring the field back within striking distance, where Saunders shot off the front to bridge the gap. Haedo eventually latched on as well, and the trio rode on to lap the field and tuck back safely into the group with 17 laps remaining. USPRO champion Mark McCormack (Colavita Olive Oil) and Davide Frattihi (Monex), as the remnants of a failed chase group, finished ahead of the main field sprint in fourth and fifth respectively. In th women's race, Laura Van Gilder (Genesis Scuba) took the CapTech Classic away from last year's winner Lynn Gaggioli (T-Mobile) late in the race. Working to bridge up to Kori Kelly (Genesis Scuba) who had spent much of the day away in a solo break, Gaggioli unwittingly brought Van Gilder along for the ride. Van Gilder then beat Gaggioli to the line.
