Boonen gets it right

Quick.Step-Davitamon's Tom Boonen made up for yesterday's near miss by winning the second stage of the Tour of Belgium in a bunch sprint in Knokke Heist. The 24 year old picked up his ninth win of the season by beating Stefan van Dijk (Lotto-Domo) and Roy Sentjens (Rabobank). The race leadership stayed with Geert Omloop (MrBookmaker-Palmans).
"I didn't want to let the win go," said Boonen. "It was a tough and dangerous finale, really tight. My last leadout man Zanini missed the second last corner, and then I was alone in front. I'm glad I redeemed the expectations. For me the job is done. I came here to win a stage and that's happened. I felt that I had good legs at the start. On Wednesday I wasn't completely recovered from my efforts in the Tour de Picardie."
The stage was again held around the western/coastal part of Belgium between Oostende and Knokke Heist. Again the weather was warm and the wind moderate from the north. After 60 km of racing, Bert Roesems (Bodysol) attacked and rode solo for 50 km before he was brought back. His teammate Sébastien Rosseler counter-attacked very soon after, but his effort met with similar success.
The peloton was together when it reached the first finishing circuit in Knokke Heist, and a group of nine riders including Ludo Dierckxsens and Stijn Devolder tried to forge clear. But Boonen's Quick.Step boys were particularly vigilant today and pulled it back.
A late attack by Nico Mattan (Bodysol) didn't prevent the stage finishing in a mass sprint, and Boonen got it right today to win the stage ahead of Van Dijk and Sentjens.
