Wins to Pic, Candelario in attacking crits
Controversy for Fraser & Dionne

The downtown criterium is always a crowd favorite at Redlands and the riders did not disappoint as they put on a show of fast, aggressive racing in both the men's and women's competitions.
The stories for both genders unfolded in much the same way. In both races the attacks came early and often keeping the pace high and the riders strung out single file almost the entire race. No one was able to stay away in either competition with the GC leader from each gender patrolling the front of the field and many teams wanting to set things up for a sprint. In the last lap though the similarities ended.

The women's race was a straight forward affair with Genesis-Scuba delivering the 1-2 punch of Tina Pic and Laura Van Gilder to the line ahead of Victory Brewing's Gina Grain. With no points on the line in tomorrow's final stage they also wrapped up the Green Jersey competition for Van Gilder as long as she finishes within the time cut.
The men's race was a bit more complicated as a controversy erupted involving two time defending Redlands Crit Champ Charles Dionne (Webcor Builders) and Gord Fraser (Health Net). On the last lap Fraser was in the lead after a high powered Health Net leadout. Dionne had his own high octane leadout even though it consisted of just one guy, Chris Horner, and that landed him on Fraser's wheel. Out of the third to last turn Dionne went to make his move past Fraser and they entered the next turn side by side with Dionne on the outside. Fraser's line took him from the apex of the turn all the way to edge of the road and that left no where for Dionne to go but into the barriers.
Dionne was obviously not pleased and told Cyclingnews, "things like that should not happen. I'm pretty mad, but thank God nothing is broken. My shoulder is pretty sore and I'll have some bruises, but I should be able to ride tomorrow." After detailing his view of how the incident unfolded, he concluded by saying "...it was ugly, that is all I have to say about it."

Fraser contended that at the speed they were traveling if he cut the corner any tighter he would have either slid his wheel out or hit his pedal had he not taken the whole width of the road. Many eye witnesses had a different take on it including the official in the corner who relegated Fraser to last place even though he crossed the line in third.
The whole thing caused a loss of momentum for Fraser and so Alex Candelario (Jelly Belly-Aramark) who had a front row seat for the whole thing blew past him, through the final turn and held it to the line for his biggest career result yet.

- with one lap to go it was Genesis-Scuba on the front with 4 of the first 7 riders
