Redlands Bicycle Classic - 2.5/2.9.2Redlands, California, March 23-28, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - March 26: The Sun Panorama Point Road Race, 67.6/97.6kmBessette takes yellow; Horner in cruise controlFor the fourth day in a row, Chris Horner (Webcor Builders) stamped his dominance on the 2004 Redlands Bicycle Classic by bridging up to the early break in the late stages of the race. In the women's race, Kristin Armstrong (T-Mobile) took a convincing win in today's Sun Panorama Road Race, outsprinting her two breakaway companions. Initiator of the break, Lyne Bessette (Quark), made up time on previous race leader Genevieve Jeanson and now wears the yellow jersey going into stage four. Men's reportRather than blow right past his opposition to another stage victory, Horner instead swept up the remnants of the break one by one, and drove to the finish with the others barely hanging on for the ride. At the line it, was Ivan Dominguez (Colavita-Bolla) getting the better of Danny Pate (Health Net) and Cesar Grajales (Jittery Joe's) by a bike length for his first win of the season. Afterward Dominguez was clearly in good spirits while joking with the press. At one point, the Cuban immigrant was explaining to a local reporter how he defected to the US and added with a chuckle, "Fidel Castro, he no like me no more." On the course it was no joking matter, as Dominguez jumped in the early move in part to protect the green points jersey of team-mate Aaron Olson. With him were Danny Pate and Mike Sayers from Health Net/Maxxis, Alex Candelario of Jelly Belly-Aramark and Kevin Brouchard-Hall from the U23 US National Team. As the laps ticked by, it looked like they would stay away to sprint it out among themselves as none of them were a threat to Chris Horners' GC lead. Horner in fact stated afterward that his Webcor team would have been happy to let them have a solid five minutes. Other teams including Monex and Sierra Nevada were not content to let the stage win go though, and the gap was kept to within two and a half minutes. Up front, it was Health Net playing the numbers game as the only team in the break with more than one rider. Danny Pate went up the road with a lap and a half to go and quickly built a 14 second gap over lone chaser Kevin Brouchard-Hall. Just behind them Sayers, Candelario and Dominguez played a bit of cat and mouse as they approached the main climb for the final time. At the same time that Pate made his move, Horner sensed the break was still within reach and sent his team to the front. On the final climb, it was Cesar Grajales (Jittery Joe's) setting the pace at the head of the main field with Horner on his wheel. Two thirds of the way up the climb as the grade leveled out, Horner took time to glance back, only to find that he and Grajales were all alone. Feeling that it wouldn't hurt to get a little more time on his rivals before Sunday's difficult Sunset Road Race, Horner took up the pacemaking himself and from that point on, it was all aboard on the Horner Express as he rode like a runaway freight train to the finish. Over the top of the KOM, the Horner and Grajales duo picked up Dominguez first and then reeled in the others one by one. Dominguez was very appreciative of Horner's late race efforts that he obviously benefited greatly from, saying: "He [Horner] was the man. He was driving it from the KOM to the finish." And from behind that incredibly long leadout, the light-hearted Cuban sprang to a stage victory in his first ever appearance at Redlands. Women's reportThe women's road race comprised four laps of a 16.9km loop making up 67.6km. Within each lap was a gradual climb where the feed zone was situated, followed shortly after by the main climb of the day. The climb starts with an s-turn that is about 8% in gradient and then turns left where riders face a 20% wall which later levels out towards the top. The climb is tough and traditionally causes carnage in the bunch. In the women's race, an early break formed in lap one, consisting of Amy Moore (Quark), Grace Fleury (Genesis Scuba) Melanie Quaid (Ford Racing) and Kate Maher (Team Basis). Their lead got out to about two minutes at it's greatest point with the Rona team not able to reel it it. By the third lap, only three of the aforementioned riders remained, having a 20" lead on the rest of the field. It was early on the climb of this third lap that Bessette made her move with a strong attack. She took Sue Palmer Komar (Genesis Scuba) and Armstrong with her and drove the break gaining time on Christine Thorburn (Webcor) who was just off the back. The peloton were another 10" back on Thorburn by the time the race had reached the top of the climb, with Jeanson leading the chase. When the trio caught the original break, Bessette had the help of her teammate Moore, who drove the new break until the base of the final climb. With the peloton splitting into pieces, the race became a war of attrition with the gap to the front three continutally increasing. Thiis gave Bessette every chance of overtaking the tour lead on the road. Behind, Jeanson was chasing hard desperately trying to save her yellow jersey to no avail. The break stayed away to the finish, with Moore and the rest of original break getting caught by small groups on the final climb. With 150m to go Armstrong kicked and took the sprint ahead of Palmer-Komar and Bessette. Finishing 39 seconds ahead of the next group of riders, meant that Bessette became the new tour leader, within Jeanson moving back into second place overall. Bessette explained her timely move when Cyclingnews caught up with her after the race. "I noticed that the field was having a hard time at the beginning of the climb, so I decided to attack there rather than wait for the steep section. I thought, that way I could gain more time by the top. I also noticed that Jeanson was sitting at the back of the bunch and my teammates were letting me know where she was." Bessette said that the three in the break worked well together. "We all had something to gain from the break, so it worked out well," she said. "At the end I wasn't worried about the sprint, I was just interested in the yellow jersey. In the men's race, leader Chris Horner was once again there at the finish in the final five-man group, but Colavita's sprinter Ivan Dominguez took theline honours, breaking Horner's run of stage victories.
