Redlands Bicycle Classic - 2.5/2.9.2Redlands, California, March 23-28, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - March 25: Redlands Ford Oak Glen Road Race, 129/171.7kmHorner still on top, Jeanson cracksBy Kristy Scrymgeour and Rob Karman Chris Horner (Webcor) once again flew up the final climb to take his third stage win of the tour and increase his lead in GC by another 45 seconds or so. To the surprise of many though, Jeanson did not do the same. Her archrival Lyne Bessette was able to attack her at a vital moment on the final climb with Jeanson not able to respond. The Redlands Ford Oak Glen stage is a staple of the Redlands tour and certainly one that riders always remember. The men start at Brookside Park in Redlands and complete and initial 43 km to Lake Matthews, from where the women start. From there the course continues towards the mountain along rolling hills until they finally reach the base of the climb. The road starts gradually going up with 16km remaining in the race, but it is at 10km to go when the race turns left onto Oak Glen Road that the steep part of the climb begins and the climbers start to put the pressure on. Today in the men's race, attacks began early and after only 36km a group was away and gaining convincing time. In the break were Eric Wohlberg (Sierra Nevada), Jacob Erker (Team Seasilver), Caleb Manion (Jelly Belly),Scott Moninger and Danny Pate (Health Net presented by Maxxis), Aaron Olsen (Colavita Olive Oil) and Blake Caldwell (TIAA-CREF Development Team). The group worked well together with Danny Pate working hard to drive the break for his teammate Scott Moninger to move up in GC and eventually the gap got out to 1'30". During his time in the break Aaron Olsen was going for the sprint points. "I don't think I've ever done the Oak Glen stage without being in the break," he said. "I decided that since I was there, I would go for some points." Olsen now wears the sprint jersey going into stage three. Behind, Webcor were forced to the front again to chase for Horner, but this time they had some help from Jittery Joe's who decided to defend Cesar Grajales' second place on GC. Just after the left hand turn onto Oak Glen road, the break was caught and the bunch started to split due to gravity. Horner's high tempo pace on the front aided this and only a few riders were able to stay on his wheel. Directly following Horner as he headed up the hill was Jurgen Van den Broeck (US Postal Service presented by Berry Floor), with Grajales on his wheel. A couple of other riders were also able to stay on the wheel but not for long. Eventually Van Den Broeck started to fall off the pace and Grajales jumped around to grab Horner's wheel. Horner continued to push the pace up the climb encouraging Grajales as he went. "I wanted Grajales to maintain his second place on GC," explained Horner, "because Jittery Joe's helped us in the chase today. If another team moved into second place they may not be so keen to settle for second in GC and help us chase." With a couple of kilometres remaining in the race, Grajales could no longer hold the pace and Horner pulled away to gain another 45 seconds by the finish. Adam Bergman (Jelly Belly) made a timely attack later in the climb and soloed in to take third place in the stage, with John Lieswyn (Health Net/Maxxis) just outsprinting Liam Killeen (IMPSport) to take fourth place. Horner was content with his win today and very happy with his team. "My team started with five guys on the front today and at the bottom of the climb the same five guys were still on the front. They did a great job and I'm really happy."
In the women's race the TDS team was aggressive early and within no time a break of three girls were off the front. They were away for the loop of the lake before getting caught and more attacks being launched. With all the early attacks, the Rona team was forced to do a lot of chasing and it wasn't until the first KOM that things started to settle down after which Rona set pace at the front. The other battle out on the road was the battle for the sprint jersey. The Genesis Scuba and Victory Brewing teams tried to outdo each other with their lead out trains to get their sprinters Laura Van Gilder and Gina Grain into the jersey. At the end of the day, the sprint jersey was on the back of Van Gilder. Later, at the bottom of the climb, Jeanson attacked, taking Bessette, Christine Thorburn (Webcor), Sue Palmer Komar and one other rider with her. Jeanson set the pace into the headwind up the climb until finally only Bessette and Thorburn were left. With three kilometers to go at the slight dip in the road, Bessette made her move and attacked Jeanson taking Thorburn with her. Jeanson was not able to respond as the pair pulled away. "I noticed she was slowing a little bit so I went for it," said Bessette. Thorburn came through and drove hard but Lyne came around her with three hundred meters to go to take the sprint and win the stage. Thorburn took second and Jeanson managed to hold on to take third place ahead of Palmer Komar, with T-Mobile's Kristin Armstrong taking fifth place. Bessette, who crashed early in the race and had to chase to get back on, was very happy with her win and said she drew from the experience she gained when riding with the Saturn team. "All day I could hear Ina [Teutenberg] in my ear saying 'not yet, not yet'. I remember her saying once that you can gain more time in the last 300 meters than you can in the last two kilometers." Thorburn was also very pleased with her race, although expressed that she would have liked a stage win. "This is my biggest result really, although my sixth place last year at T-Mobile International was also very big for me." Thorburn explained that she really wanted to work hard with Bessette in the final kilometers. "I thought we should work together to gain as much time as we could," she said, "but Lyne is a cagey rider and she came around me with 300m to go." Gracious in defeat was Jeanson who made no excuses and simply said "Lyne was just stronger than me today. She deserved the win and Christine rode very well also." When asked if she was tired from the previous days climb she said she wasn't "particularly tired. No more than anyone else and my knee was also fine today." The only thing she did say was that she was disappointed that she had let her team down. "They worked so hard on the front today and I feel bad that I couldn't win the race after that." Jeanson still leads the tour by about 10 seconds from Bessette going into tomorrow's Sun Panorama Point Road Race. PhotographyImages by Rob Karman/www.roadbikephotos.com
