Tour of the Southern GrampiansAustralia, March 27-28, 2004The Stages
Inaugural Southern Grampians Tour Ends in a 'Walker Over'The Coburg Cycling Club have taken cycling event co-ordination to a new level in hosting the first Tour of Southern Grampians. The two-day, three-stage race was held in the idyllic surroundings of Coleraine in Victoria's South West. With almost perfect weather conditions, strong local support and a challenging course, the tour had all the ingredients necessary to produce a successful Tour. A and B Grade riders faced two stages on Saturday, Stage 1 was a short 36 kilometre race, including one Category 2 climb, whilst Stage 2 included two ascents of Douglas Road (Category 1) and a race distance of 75 kilometres. Stage 3 was held on the Sunday and would prove to be the toughest stage, 111 kilometres including two Category 1 climbs. Bonus seconds were awarded to top five placegetters in each stage and top three in the King of the Mountain climbs. Additionally, riders could also contest the overall King of the Mountains, with the first three riders of each climb being awarded points. Will Walker (Brunswick CC) and Peter Pape (Geelong West CC) firmed as favourites to take out the A grade Tour after their impressive rides at the Australian Open Road Championships in January with 14th and 12th places respectively. They faced tough competition from Chris Bradford 2003 Oceania Road Cycling Champion (Carnegie Caulfied CC), Sun Tour rider Colin Thornton (Broadford CC) and many other well credentialed riders Local results 2004 |
