Day 4 - June 27: Elite Men's Road Race, 228 km

Mancebo's Tour appetizer

"This is just an appetizer before the Tour de France," Francesco Mancebo said after earning the Spanish national road title on Sunday. The Illes Balears-Banesto rider won ahead of Alejandro Valverde (Comunidad Valenciana-Kelme) and Francisco Lara (Costa de Almeria) over a 228 kilometre parcours in Santander. Mancebo's success capped a perfect championship year for Illes Balears after Ivan Gutierrez's victory in the time trial on Thursday.

Despite a fast 41 km/h average speed in the opening hours of the race, an early break formed with Mancebo's teammate Antonio Tauler, Ricardo Serrano (Cafés Baqué), Carlos Garcia Quesada (Kelme), and USPRO Championships winner Francisco Ventoso (Saunier Duval-Prodir). This group built a three minute lead over the main field, but could not make the advantage stick over the long distance and with so many favourites still in the group behind.

After reeling in the first serious move of the day, it was next the turn of a solo escapist, Haimar Zubeldia (Euskaltel-Euskadi), who on his own managed to break clear and gain nearly four minutes on the field over the rolling middle portion of the parcours. Zubeldia, fifth in the Tour de France last year, showed himself to be ready for the big show in July with his powerful effort, but he too fell victim to the steady chase by the Illes Balears team before the principal difficulty of the day.

Heading into the Cabárceno national park, and the main climbs of the day, Zubeldia was caught and a number of short-lived counter attacks followed, none producing an effect worthy of final victory. Once more the day became an Illes Balears vs. Kelme battle, as Pablo Lastras and David Latasa rode clear with a handful of seconds over the field, provoking at the same time a 16 man split that would ultimately contest the victory.

It was Lara who launched the last ditch attack to go clear, just under the kilometre to go banner and with five seconds on a group including Mancebo and Valverde. Cofidis' Luis Perez led home another chase group another five seconds back, but there would be no regrouping before the line as the attacks continued.

Knowing the finishing speed of Valverde, Mancebo left nothing to chance and jumped clear with 500m to go, putting in an enormous turn of speed to put several seconds on Valverde and cross the line alone to take the national road title. Lara held on for third place, while the on-form Miguel Martin Perdiguero (Saunier Duval), winner of the recent Volta a Catalunya, finished in fourth, just missing a podium place.
