Firenze - Modena - U23 NEItaly, June 2, 2004Australian National Team ReportBy Brian Stephens, Australian Under 23 Team Manager After returning to Italy from the Tour of Japan yesterday, the AIS Mapei Aqua Australian team raced the Firenze - Modena. The race actually starts in Pistoia and finishes just outside Maranello in Fiorano. The course is very tough, crossing the Apenine Mountains through Abetone. Riding for the team were Ashley Humbert and Richard Moffatt (AIS/ NSWIS), Bernard Sulzberger (AIS/TIS), Aaron Kemps (AIS/QAS), Mark Jamieson (AIS/TIS) returning from the track world championships and Under 21 team members William Walker (VIS) and Andrew Wyper (NSWIS). As usual in this race, the field was decimated on the climb to Abetone. For us, Ashley Humbert was the best, crossing in the front group of 15 riders while Richard Moffatt crossed in the second group and Aaron Kemps, the third. The front group fought the placings out with Ashley being outnumbered as most other riders in the front had team-mates there. He eventually rode well to run 12th. A group of three went clear with 20km to go including eventual winner, Polish rider, Marczynski, from Daver. Results1 Tomasz Marczynski (Pol) Daver ... 12 Ashley Humbert (Aus) AIS Mapei Aqua |
