Euskal Bizikleta - 2.1Spain, June 2-6, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - June 4: Agurain - Bidegoian, 154.1 kmLiberty trifectaBy Martin Hardie in Bidegoian Angel Vicioso of Liberty Seguros got one back on Saunier's Miguel Angel Martin Perdiguero today when he finally secured himself a stage victory after two day's as the bridesmaid. But more decisively for the longer term is the fact that Manolo Saiz, Roberto Heras and co. in Liberty Seguros pulled another one over the rest of the field and have put themselves in a strong position to defend the leadership - and it is a strong position with three options. As a result of the goings on atop San Ageda, the day's last Cat. 1 climb, Liberty now have three riders, Vicioso, Gil and Heras, sharing the lead 26 seconds ahead of Zubeldia of Euskaltel and Txema del Olmo of Maia. 154 kilometres doesn't sound much in the scale of things, but add in five categorised climbs and a whole host of others that supposedly don't count and you get an idea of why the results look the way they do - another tough day in the office in Pais Vasco for the peloton and today Cyclingnews got to see it up close and dangerous from the front row seat courtesy of Maia Milaneza's Director Manuel Zeferino at the controls. Liberty Seguros played their cards hard and poker faced again today and with it brought about the third decisive selection this race has seen. And as has been the way over this week, the other teams were allowed to do their thing whilst Liberty waited for the legs to be drained before they laid their cards on the table. Today's play of the day caused a bit of a stir as it transpired, and it occurred within the final eight kilometres of the race during the last kilometres of the tough San Ageda climb before the habitual Basque plunge to the finish line in the valley floor below. Earlier in the day as the route meandered through narrow open farm roads, past bright green fields peppered with gold and red flowers, a sizeable group slipped away and commenced to give itself some time before the day's fun began in earnest. The group that left the cover of the peloton at the 15 km mark was: Mauro Facci, Julian Sanchez (Fassa), Alvaro Gonzalez de Galdeano, Carlos Barredo (Liberty), Unai Etxebarria (Euskaltel), Xabier Zandio, Jose Arrieta (Illes Baleares), Claudio Lucchini, Simone Bertoletti (Lampre), Gustavo Domingues (relax), Giampaolo Chuela (Vini Caldirola), Anthony Charteau (La Boulangère), Staf Scheirlinckx (Cofidis) and Juan Carlos Dominguez (Saunier Duval). Behind them, Antonio Olmo (Kelme) set off in pursuit, but just missed the boat. Kelme's Olmo never made it but he did manage to get close. He was absorbed as the route floored the Deba valley in Arasate. The group, however, had managed to get a gap of nearly six and a half minutes. Over the first categorised climb of the day, the Cat. 2 Deskarga, which straddled the route after 57 kilometres, Xabi Zandio, Julian Sanchez, Arrieta and Charteau caused things to fracture. They were closely pursued by Barredo, Etxebarria and Bertoletti, while the rest fell to about 200 metres behind. The lead group remained splintered off and on for another 23 km, over the Cat. 3 Aztiria, but on the unclassified "repetxo" before the sprint at Ormaiztegi the 14 riders regrouped. Within ten kilometres though, the gap was starting to fall - at this point by about a minute and a half to 4'33. At the summit of the snaking Cat. 2 Mandubia after 91.4 km, the gap was down to 2'30. On this climb, the effects of the continual climbing, descending and catching up really started to make an effect on the peloton behind. Numerous riders, were off the back, including former World Champion Romans Vainsteins and the Russo-Italianos of LPR, who seemed to be off on every drag upwards, fighting their way through the convoy up and navigating at high speed down to try and regain a place within the fold. These efforts meant that by the start of the first Cat. 1, the Urraki, many had nothing left in the tank to give in their attempts to try and remain in contact. The Urraki criss-crosses its way up out of a deep narrow valley, exposed for the early slopes. Maia's Director Zerafino told his team, notably young Portuguese neo-pro Bruno Pires, to hold their horses and to hang in with Txema del Olmo. As we climbed into the Maia car, there was a continual string of riders coming back to us, attacks were made ahead, such as by Baque's Felix Cardenas, but it wasn't long before we passed each protagonist in the car, their tanks were spent after one go at the front. Ahead, Vicioso and Dominguez of Saunier were lifting the pace and what remained of the peloton was out of the saddle, strung out trying to hold their wheels. Etxebarria and Laiseka joined in the festivities as by now the peloton had wholly absorbed the day's principal break. The climb seemed to go on and on. Didier Rous passed us, going back and he was, to say the least, well accompanied by other companions of the route. Finally, the top, and then a steep, narrow, wooded road, not in the least the smoothest road in the Basque country, and the remains of the peloton were hurtling down, back wheels skipping as the surface changed character where it has been repatched over time. It leveled out with less than 30 kilometres left, and then we seemed to descend for an eternity. The TV reception in the car failed us as the valley walled us in on either side, but we knew Sylvain Chavanel went solo through this next stretch. Liberty's Serrano punctured and Barredo slowed down, waiting for his teammate. Manolo wanted everyone to the fore for the day's final encounter. Down, down towards Azpeitia and Chavanel had pulled 25 seconds out of the bag, then he had 35 seconds as we hooked hard left. Three kilometres left across the valley floor, 8.5 km up Santa Ageda and then 5 km down to the finish at Bidegoian. At the beginning of the climb, Chavanel had conserved 31 seconds of his lead. A kilometre up the climb he had 21 seconds. We passed the remnants. Unai, Joseba Zubeldia, Alvaro Gonzalez de Galdeano, Paternina's Jonathon Gonzalez, Saunier's Joaquim Rodriguez (who already is being touted as a future Vuelta winner), and three more Paterninas came back to us as Euskaltel put down the hammer on the climb. The road switched right and steepened around a curve and we found Chavanel, who was soon to be relieved of his lead. Then the drama of the day commenced. Laiseka attacked, the Euskaltel climber really giving it heaps and put an immediate gap between him and the group. Vicioso managed to bridge to him and they commenced to widen their advantage. Euskaltel and Liberty seemed content to let them go, meaning that Buenahora and del Olmo among others had to take up the slack. Laiseka created the largest gap seen so far in three stages of climbing. He and Vicioso soon managed to make 40 seconds of space between them and the group with half of the final climb still ahead. They powered across a false flat and then all of a sudden it is over, Vicioso turned it off. Of the two he would easily take the sprint. But Manolo seemed to have had other ideas. Laiseka was not happy, screaming, waving his arms, using language that we can't repeat on a family oriented website such as this. He was waving at the TV motor cycle, pointing at Vicioso. It was all over. Heras and co. had arrived and there were now three Libertys: Heras, Gil, Vicioso, with Laiseka and Zubeldia, and Txema del Olmo. Liberty put the pedal to the metal and Euskaltel and the others were put into difficulty: the race was still ascending and Heras, Gil and Vicioso left the other three behind. Laiseka wanted to chase but needed also to look after Zubeldia. Txema del Olmo worked in vain and by the top, the three Libertys managed to open a gap of more than fifteen seconds. As the chasers neared the summit, Baque's emerging star Peio Arreitunandia got across to join them. From the top it was basically 5 kilometres down and across a 500 metre false flat to the finish. Liberty's poker faced game gave them a one, two, three. Vicioso got his victory after two days of coming second to Perdi. Liberty now dominates the GC, 26 seconds ahead of Zubeldia and del Olmo. Tomorrow is a split day - a short 82.5 road stage: another one that is on paper an 'easy stage'. And then what might be decisive later in the afternoon, a short but tight 15 km time trial. The contenders have now been thinned again, thanks to another move by Manolo's boys. You could say there are now five. Of the three Libertys, the inside word we got from Marino Lejarreta is that Vicioso might have a little advantage in the afternoon over Heras. Maia's Director, Manuel Zeferino doesn't think the tiny Txema del Olmo has the power on the flat to pick up the time he lost today against the clock. Zubeldia has come here stating that he was more interested in a stage win and a podium position, and that he didn't want to go all out for the victory before his major meeting in July. Whether there is a little rage in the Euskaltel camp as a result of today and events earlier in the week may or may not influence that outlook. But at the moment it might come down to Zubeldia battling the clock and the three Libertys tomorrow afternoon to set himself up for a podium position on Sunday. PhotographyImages by AFP Photo
