Tattersall's Cup - NEAustralia, July 28-August 25, 2004Main Page Results Previous Race Next Race Race 3 - August 11: Ararat Rural City ClassicBradford slips away from rivalsFormer Australian triathlon champion Chris Bradford, from Ivanhoe, scored a major cycling triumph in the Ararat Rural City Classic yesterday. Bradford, 30, battled slippery conditions on the winding roads in the Grampians to win the 122km race by 15 seconds from fierce competitor and pre-race favorite David McKenzie in a time of 3 hours, 3 minutes and 55 seconds. Third placegetter was David Tanner of New South Wales. Riders faced 108 rivals out on the road yesterday in the third round of the 2004 Tattersall's Cup series. Bradford won the 1996 Australian triathlon championship from Guy Andrews at Mooloolaba and took up cycling three years ago. He now races Asian circuit with an Indonesian team. "I set myself to win the Tattersall's Cup series this year but had bad luck in the first two races with broken chains," he said. "The Tatts Cup races are the hardest to win in Australia because everybody is trying to qualify for the Herald Sun Tour." The top 10 riders in the five-race Tattersall's Cup will earn a spot in this year's Herald Sun Tour which starts on October 14 and concludes October 24. After round three, the series leader is Peter Milostic of New South Wales, with 54 points. Victorians occupy the next six placings with William Walker and Dominic Gatto both from Brunswick in second and third respectively. Emerging as a strong contender, Matthew Lloyd of St Kilda, holds out equal fourth with David McKenzie, followed by David Pell of Bendigo in sixth. McKenzie, winner of the 2001 Tattersall's Cup, said the competition is this year's Tattersall's Cup is fierce. The next race in the series is the Tour of Baw Baw next Wednesday, August 18, then competitors cross the Bass Straight to conclude the series in Tasmania.
