Tattersall's Cup - NEAustralia, July 28-August 25, 2004Main Page Results Previous Race Next Race Race 2 - August 4: Tour of Latrobe CityMcLachlan victory despite disaster driveBarcelona Olympian Robbie McLachlan overcame a horror overnight drive from Canberra to Traralgon to win the Tour of Latrobe City cycling classic yesterday. McLachlan, 33, a schholteacher by profession left Canberra at 4pm Tuesday for the 500km trek to the Latrobe Valley but his car lights failed around midnight at Cann River. He spent a cold, uncomfortable and sleepless few hours in his vehicle before making off for Traralgon at daybreak yesterday. McLachlan won the 125km event on a testing windswept circuit from Tour of Italy stage winner David McKenzie, with former rowing champion Dominic Gatto, third. The race was the second round of the 2004 Tattersall's Cup, a five-part Herald Sun Tour selection trial series which McLachlan won last year. "I felt pretty wretched throughout most of the race but just had enough power in my legs to escape from David and Dominic over the last kilometre," McLachlan said. Out-right leader in the Tattersall's Cup after the first two races is the consistent New South Welshman, Peter Milostic, who finished second in last week's City of Wyndham Classic and sixth yesterday. Milostic has 38 points, one more that Bendigo's David Pell. Three riders are hot on their tails, with 35 points each - Hector Morales from Uruguay, and William Walker and Dominic Gatto, both from Brunswick. Mathew Rex, last week's Wyndham City Classic race winner, ran into some awful luck on yesterday's race, sustaining a puncture just 5km after the start. To his credit he finished the race and is sixth overall in the aggregate points. McLachlan and McKenzie were scratchings in the Wyndham City Classic last week after arriving in Melbourne from the Tour of Qinghai Lake just four hours before the start time for the race in Werribee. Also debuting in race two was the Indonesian contingent. Traveling from average temperatures of 35 degrees in Surabaya to just 2 degrees in Melbourne last Friday night took its toll. None of the Indonesian entrants managed to place in the top 50 riders but Samai, Wanwan Setyobudi and Adi Wibowo finished the Tour of Latrobe City.
