Tattersall's Cup - NEAustralia, July 28-August 25, 2004Race 1 - July 28: City of Wyndham Classic, 140.2kmMathew I rules in WerribeeYoung South Australian cyclist Mathew Rex began the $25,500 Tattersall's Cup Cycling series in a blaze of glory, downing his more senior opponents at today's finish in Werribee. It was a brilliant tactical ride from the 19 -year-old who was in a group of 15 riders that broke clear at 77 kilometres of the race to grab the leader's jersey by 6 seconds from New South Welshman Peter Milostic, with another South Australian Stephen Cunningham third. The Tattersall's Cup has more at stake than just winning and losing, the five race series regarded as Australia's premier domestic road cycling event. It took on an international flavor, with New Zealand and Uruguay entries received and every state in Australia represented. Riders are also vying for top 10 status to gain entry into the Herald Sun Tour. 125 riders faced the starter, with some landing in Australia at 6am the day of the race from China where they had been competing. Amid cool, drizzly conditions and despite the peleton staying intact for almost 70 kms of the 140 km race, the pace was a cracker, at times reaching 60 kms on the open flat terrain before skirting the Brisbane ranges. Despite many attacks being mounted, it was finally a group of 15 that managed to jump away to open a gap of over 4 minutes with 40 kms to go. In that group were some very well credentialled riders, headed by Uruguayan Hector Morales , Peter Milostic (NSW), William Walker, David Pell and Dominic Gatto, of Victoria, with Queenslander Tony Mann always poised for an attack. It was the final 10 kilometres that perhaps was the most exciting, attack after attack saw riders watching each other looking to grasp the slightest edge. Finally 3 kilometres from the finish at the Werribee Racecourse, the youngest of the pack Mathew Rex seized his opportunity on nullifying Morales' attack to jump clear by 100 metres with the rest stalking each other, thinking they had the South Australian covered. It was not to be. Looking over his shoulder at the chasing group worrying about each other, Rex kept the momentum to hold them safely on the line to record a moral boosting win by 6 seconds and record his best result ever. Mathew Rex's background is not a cycling one, his chosen sport was rowing but after having fitness tests and analysis at the South Australian Sports Institute he was advised to take up cycling and become a track sprinter.
