International Cycling Classic - Superweek - NEUSA, July 9-25, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 9 - July 16: American Airlines Schlitz Park Cycling ChallengeBy Kristy Scrymgeour Magen Long (Sportsbook.com) and Mike Sayers (Health Net p/b Maxxis) took out today's superweek races in Brewers Hill and Schlitz Park respectively. In the women's race Long has been attempting to outsprint Tina Pic (Genesis Scuba) all week and finally managed it today to take her first win. In the men's field, Sayers descended upon the field with fresh legs today competing in his first race of the series tonight. The men's race was riddled with intermediate primes for the points jersey, Endeavour sprint competition and "King of the Hill Sprints" today. Like the women's course the men's course was 0.8 miles in length, but was a four corner course with a steep hill to contest every lap. At the end of the day Kirk (Albers Jelly Belly/Carlsbad Clothing) came away with the KOH competition, Adam Curry (Revolution Cycling Team) won the Endeavour sprint competition. The race was aggressive but with all the sprints, nothing was able to get away until finally, after the final KOH sprint, a break of four riders got away including Sayers, Curry, Frank Dierking (ABD), and Jeremy Sartain (Bianchi/GrandPerformance) and within 5 laps they had 25 seconds on the field. A viscious chase was instigated but the four stayed away to fight it out amongst themselves. Just before the last climb up the hill Sayers attacked and held his lead to the finish line to take the win. Curry won the sprint to take second place, with Amateur leader, Frank Dierking (ABDCyclingTeam) taking third, backing up a very consistent week so far. Alex Candelario (Jelly Belly) won the sprint out of the chasers to take fifth place from Harm Jansen (Helen's/Trek VW). Series leader Carlos Vargas (Endeavour) finished twelfth today to keep the yellow jersey and now leads by 32 points over Jansen.
