International Cycling Classic - Superweek - NEUSA, July 9-25, 2004Main Page Results Previous Race Next Race Race 5 - July 13: Point Beer MGA Proving Grounds Road RaceEmile Abraham (Monex), Rebecca Much (XXX Racing) and Zach Taylor (Hot Tubes) won their respective races at day five of Superweek in Burlington, Wisconsin today. On another day of hot and humid conditions, the heat was the biggest obstacle for most riders along with the wind. The course was a loop of just under 10 miles amongst beautiful cornfields. The roads were twisty and undulating, but there were no really tough hills. The finishing straight was on a long wide road on the MGA proving grounds. In the men's race a very early break proved to be the decisive move of the day. Right from the gun Jonas Carney (Jelly Belly) attacked taking Paul Richards (MGZT) with him and established a convincing gap. Slowly in twos and threes, riders bridged to join the break and eventually two laps into the race a solid break of 15 riders drove the break. The break worked well together with the occasional sprinter like Carney and Walter Perez (Argentinian National Team) resting their legs a little, but it was certain from the get go that this was the break of the day. Harm Jansen (Helen's), who saw the break go said "once you see the right combo go up the road you just have to go." It was with one and a half laps to go that the action started in the break. Attacks kept going and eventually it was Abraham that rode away to get a gap of 40 seconds. He held this gap till the end, winning solo and walking his bike across the line just for something different. Coming in solo just behind him was Carlos Vargas (Endeavour) with Neil Shirley (Seasilver) again coming in solo for third place. Abraham was exhausted after the race saying that it was "the hardest two laps" he has ridden in a long while. "I got a gap and I kept it rolling," he said. "I still barely made it to the line, but I kept within myself and I made it." This is my style of race," he added. "The wind makes it extremely difficult and it's just a matter of who is the strongest and the luckiest of the day. A lot of people were supporting me out there and that really helps you to give that little bit extra." In the women's race, the heat made for a relatively uneventful race. The bunch stuck together most of the way with a few attacks from America's Dairyland midway through the race being reeled back in. It was with two laps to go that 18 year old Rebecca Much attacked and managed to solo away and hold off a strong bunch of women for two laps to take her first win against the senior women. Much said that she wanted to attack because the race yesterday was boring. "I wanted to do something because everyone was just rolling around. The second lap was a little hard," she added, "but I just gave it everything." Much is hoping to make the World Championship to represent the US this year by qualifying at Nationals next month. The junior race was again a part of the points series that will qualify two riders for the World Championships. The Hot Tubes team took the win again working well together to get yet another win. This time it was Zach Taylor who took the win and moves into the lead in points with his two teammates currently Zach Bolian and Brad Armstrong in second and third place. The race started with yet another early attack. Armstrong took off in the first lap with one other riders and stayed away for four laps. When he was caught, Bolian immediately countered and got away himself for two laps setting the race up perfectly for his teammate Taylor. "When he got caught, I went," Taylor explained. "I was tired from yesterday but I prefer to go steady rather than constant changes in speed, so it wasn't bad to be away. Once I got away and out of sight, I was pretty confident that I could hold it because I was pretty sure that the guys who would be chasing would be tired from chasing all day." Tomorrow's race is another road race, however it is more like a big criterium as it is an enclosed circuit race within Whitnall Park. PhotographyImages by Kristy Scrymgeour/Cyclingnews.com
