Jansen forced to come back next year, Hannos in the lead

Superweek kicked of for the women today at Menasha, Wisconsin, whilst the men competed in race two of their series. Andrea Hannos (Rona) and Harm Jansen (Helen's) won their respective events with Hannos taking home the leaders jersey for the new women's series that has been introduced for the first time ever at Superweek.
The course at Menasha is triangular in shape, consisting of two long main drags and a short side street. Riders faced a pretty warm day and a headwind on the long home straight.
In the women's race Tina Pic set a pretty high pace at the beginning stringing the bunch out down the straights. Attacks were frequent but were not allowed to get away until the 30 lap to go mark when Andrea Hannos attacked hard taking Keri Soraci (TDS) and Leigh Ann Valetti (Genesis Scuba) with her. The three got an immediate gap, which quickly grew. With three of the stronger teams in the event represented it was up to Dairyland and ABD to chase. The leading trio, however were too strong, with Hannos and Soraci working hard to keep the break away. Valetti was happy to sit in on the break as she had her team leader Pic behind in the bunch.
For 30 laps the situation stayed the same and the break gained over 1'30" on the bunch, almost lapping them in the process. It was in the very last lap that all their work nearly came undone. As they were playing cat and mouse the bunch had picked up the pace and coming down the home straight the crowd were confused at to whether the break had lapped the field on the back straight or whether the bunch had caught the break. The latter proved to be true and Hannos and Soraci just held on to take first and second place, with Pic coming home strongly to pip her teammate for third place.
Pic was very surprised to see the break so close in front of the bunch as they came down the long finishing straight. "We picked the pace up on the front with a couple of laps to go because we didn't want the break to lap us. We thought we'd have better chance to pick up some points if they didn't catch up."
Hannos was also surprised. "It was just a matter of cat and mouse," she said. During the race she felt confident, even with the break going so early. "I felt confident that if the break stayed away that I had a good shot at winning," she said. "Keri and I worked well together and I felt pretty good out there."
Later in the evening the men raced 100km over the same course. The pace was fast from the fun and small break after break went but the sprint primes stopped anything from getting to far up the road. With 14 laps to go a group of three riders pulled away from the bunch and got a good gap. Not long after four other riders bridged creating a strong break of seven riders. With five laps to go Monex had their team on the front getting ready for the sprint as it looked like the break might get reeled in. Just as it was getting close, the gap began to open up again and two new riders, Harm Jansen and another made a very decisive move and bridged to the break. The break was now nine riders including Harm Jansen (Helens RPM), Emile Abraham (Team Monex), Kasper Klostergaard Larsen (Glud & Marstrand Horsens), West Harman (Team Mack), Karl Menzies (Team MGZT), Steve Tilford (BikeSource), Jacob Nielsen (Glud & Marstrand Horsens) Neil Shirley, and Frank Dierking (ABD Cycling Team).

The break stayed and with three quarters of a lap to go Jensen made his winning move. With a perfectly timed attack he got away and soloed home for victory, leaving the remaining eight breakaway riders to sprint for second place.
"I won with my brain," he said. "During the race I was hanging on for dear life,having raced no more than ten races this year, my form this year is worse than last year." With many years of experience racing criteriums and many years of racing at superweek, Jansen said it was simply experience that got him through today. "You look who is around you,"he explained, "and you position yourself between the right people. I just waited and timed my move in the last lap. You can sense when to go."
Jansen went on to say that he has won a race every one of the eight years he has raced at Superweek. "If I didn't win one this year, it would have been my last year. Damn, this means I have to come back again next year."
