Stage 1 - July 7: Pacific Power Road Race, 110 miles
Elkern takes stage 1

Evan Elkan (Broadmark Capital Cycling) won the first stage of the Cascade Classic today which came down to a bunch sprint at the end of an aggressive day in the saddle. Elkan edged out seasoned sprinters Alex Candelario (Jelly Belly) and Gord Fraser (Health Net p/b Maxxis to take the win and earn the leaders jersey going into stage two.

After ten miles of racing the attacks began through the gorgeous landscape of Bend, Oregon. Christian Fowler from the newly formed Subway team broke away with Jeff Louder (Navigators) for one of the first breaks of the day. Fowler was caught, and Louder soloed on to take the first KOM of the day. He was later joined by another group of five riders containing John Lieswyn, Burke Swindlehurst (Navigators), Michael Creed (USPS), Charles Dionne (Webcor) and Cam Evans (Symmetrics). The gap stretched out to over three minutes but was later caught with counters to follow.
With ten miles to go, Chris Baldwin (Navigators) took off with Andrew Bajadali (O'Foto) for one final attempt to get to the line solo. They two were reeled in by Health Net who were preparing Fraser for the sprint. On the line though, it was Elkan who snuck around on the right to take the win from Candelario.

- Students from Cascade Camp cheered the racers as they headed out for the day!
- The peloton stayed together for the first 10 miles...
- ... then the breaks began with Christian Foster (Subway) and Jeff Louder (Navigators).
- Christian Foster began to tire and Louder eventually soled to the first KOM points of the 5 day stage race.
- John Lieswyn (HealthNet) works with a 5 man break, including Burke Swindlehurst (Navigators), Michael Creed (USPS), Charles Dionne (Webcor) and Cam Evans (Symmetrics).
- Burke Swindlehurst (Navigators) joins up with teammate, Jeff Louder, shortly after the KOM.
- The now 6 man break on a descent.
- The weather was perfect...
- ...and the views breathtaking...
- ...though it is doubtful that the racers had much time to look around...
- ...as they were trying to maintain their 3 minute advantage on the field.
- Webcor spent some time on the front, but didn't look to concerned about chasing down the break
- ...as teammate Charles Dionne was part of it.
- Ian MacGreggor (TIAA CREF/5280) works to help bring back the break.
- Lieswyn and Team HealthNet worked hard at the front to bring back several of the day's many break attempts.
- Team Subway also shared in the work.
- But, Charles Dionne (Webcor) was able to get away again.
- Charles Dionne (Werbcor) showed signs of tiring as he approached the final KOM of the day...
- .Dionne was caught by chasing rider, Josh Horowitz (Velo Club LaGrange).
- Again, it was Healthnet on front, bringing back the two man break shortly after Horowitz scored the King of the Mountains points.
- Chris Baldwin (Navigators) and Andrew Bajadali (O'Foto) attempted one last break as the course began its 10 mile finishing descent.
- The peloton came back together as they headed towards the finishing line, leaving the matter to be decided by a field sprint.
- Evan Elkan won the sprint by a whisker... or more perhaps
