Cooke confirms early form

Baden Cooke claimed the first stage win and leader's jersey in the Tour of Med, confirming his early season form which took him to victory in the GP Marseillaise just over a week ago. Cooke also provided a welcome result for his FDJeux.com team, after a long escape by Brad McGee forced rival teams to chase over the hilly parcours. A fast-finishing Michele Bartoli (Team CSC) finished second, followed by Etoile de Bessèes winner Laurent Brochard.
Cooke's presence in the final selection was a sign that he not only can sprint, but can handle a difficult parcours that sent the other top sprinters, including a motivated Mario Cipollini, backwards in the bunch. The select finishing group had no answer for Cooke's sprint, but riders like Bartoli, Michael Boogerd (Rabobank) and world champion Igor Astarloa could be content with their racing debuts. For Team CSC, three riders in the top ten was a fine start, and Jörg Jaksche, suffering in the last few days with a bad stomach, managed to arrive with the lead group as well.
For Brad McGee, the racing began on the first climb of the day, as he escaped alone after just 23 kilometres. The Australian was eager to have a good ride after a bout of food poisoning forced him to forfeit his place at the Jacob's Creek Tour Down Under in January. McGee toiled alone, building a maximum lead of almost five minutes, before the Cofidis and Rabobank teams of Astarloa and Boogerd decided to pull him back.
The biggest counter attack came from Jaksche, who pulled a small group clear on the final first category climb. Swept up by the leaders in the closing kilometres, however, it was Cooke's turn to open up the throttle as he easily won ahead of Bartoli and Brochard.
