Brochard finishes on top
Ag2r-Prévoyance takes three stages and overall
Laurent Brochard became the first French victor of the 2004 season when he won the fourth stage of the Etoile de Bessèges Saturday, and Sunday he finished the stage on top of the overall classification, maintaining his slender advantage over compatriot Sylvain Calzati (Oktos-Saint Quentin). Brochard's teammate Jaan Kirsipuu sprinted to victory in the final stage, giving the team three stage wins (it was Kirsipuu's second) and the overall in the five stage race.
Despite a breakaway of 13 riders that lasted for two thirds of today's stage, Ag2r-Prévoyance worked tirelessly to conserve Brochard's leader's jersey, and position Estonian sprinter Kirsipuu for another bunch sprint. The break's advantage never topped more than three minutes, and after the peloton reeled in the escapees within the final 15km, the stage was set for a perfect ending for Vincent Lavenu's Ag2r team.
