Alberto Benito wins bunch sprint

The first stage of the 30th Volta ao Algarve was decided in a bunch sprint with Spanish rider Alberto Benito (Antarte-Rota Dos Moveis) finishing ahead of Candido Barbosa (L.A. Pecol) and Angel Edo (Milaneza-Maia) in Albufeira. The race also marked the debut of Lance Armstrong's professional season, and the five time Tour winner finished in the peloton as 82nd, in the same time as the winner.
"It was a good day, with an excellent atmosphere and no falls, which is always the most important," Armstrong told Marca. US Postal team director Johan Bruyneel added, "For the first day it went OK. Lance is not here to win."
The 145 km first stage consisted of a large, not too hilly loop starting and finishing in the seaside town of Albufeira. The break of the day included Staf Scheirlinckx (Cofidis), Jordi Berenguer (Beppi-Ovarense) and Wim De Vocht (Relax-Bodysol), who managed to soak up most of the mountain and intermediate sprint points on offer.
Everything came together in time for a bunch sprint, in which Benito upstaged favourites Barbosa and Edo to claim victory.
