Stage 3 - August 4: Areniscas de los Pinares - Lag. de Neila, 139.65 km
Valverde, but this time just!

Alejandro Valverde was dominant again today but for a change this week he was challenged and in the end had to fight hard to get the stage win by less than a wheel from Illes Balears-Banesto's Denis Menchov. The stage that finished up the special category Lagunas de Niela saw the front of the race quickly thin out in the last five kilometres as the main protagonists repeatedly changed the pace.
Valverde looked like he was out of it when Leonardo Piepoli moved off the front with Menchov following in the last kilometre. Valverde was five seconds behind the duo with only 500 meters to go, but over the steep final ramp he was able to claw his way back to their wheels. Piepoli tried again to dislodge him but the effort was too much as Menchov and Valverde passed him and moved off to fight the victory out between themselves. Shoulder to shoulder they went and it seemed that Menchov might just get the better of Valverde but his throw to the line was just a little early, allowing the Kelme rider the win by a wheel.
The day had been characterised by an early break which formed over the day's first climb, the Cat. 3 Alto de Cargadero at kilometre 19. The first movers were Josep Jufré, Koldo Gil, Vicente García Acosta and Ion del Río. They were soon joined in their task by Constantino Zaballa, Stefano Garzelli and David Latasa. By kilometre 56 and the passing of the Cat. 1 Alto del Collado they had made a gap for themselves of 3'10.
Their advantage peaked at km 75 at 3'50. After 110 kms and with the peloton running them down, Josep Jufrè and Ion del Rio attacked their companions. The leftovers were absorbed over the next five kilometres and within a couple of kilometres of the start of the final ascent Jufré and del Rio were themselves absorbed.
Five kilometres might not sound like much for a special category climb but the Lagunas is a narrow rough patchwork of old bitumen which averages around 11% but pitches consistently to more than 15%. Kelme was in charge of setting the tempo and the team's pace along with the initial gradient of the climb were responsible for reducing the group of thirty to no more than ten in a few hundred metres.
As they skirted the approaches to the climb, Saunier's Joaquim Rodriguez had managed to make himself some space off the front. Behind, Kelme's Javier Pascaul was setting the pace with Valverde on his wheel. As soon as Pascual ran down Rodriguez, the Catalan's Saunier teammate Juan Carlos Dominguez attacked. The magic yellow trick for the day seemed to be a three pronged attack on the climb as with Rodriguez caught and Dominguez gone, Piepoli was safely ensconced behind Valverde. Along with them were García Quesada, Menchov, Dueñas, Jonathon González, Vladimir Karpets and Marcos Serrano.
Through the fourth kilometre which has some very nice 16% patches, Dominguez struggled low over the top tube putting all his weight into the pedals to try and keep the bike bouncing, not really rolling, over the bad road. He kept at it as the pace set behind was still shelling members of the pursuing group. Dominguez looked like he was really having trouble just keeping the bike going forward and up as no more than 50 metres behind the pursuers hung off.
Pascual pulled off and Valverde drifted to the back of the group. Karpets couldn't hold the pace as they reached the 3 km to go point. The big blonde sideburned Russian churned away, fighting for all he was worth to get back. He managed, as Jonathon Gonzalez and Moises Dueñas attacked and started to cross to Dominguez. Gonzalez was looking good, much smoother than the others, as he reached Dominguez and went onwards. Valverde had to react as the Paternina Basque was only 11 seconds behind him in the general classification. With 2 km to go, Valverde had managed to drag himself, Piepoli and Menchov back to the wheel of Gonzalez.
There were for now five left at the head of affairs - Gonzalez, Dueñas, Valverde, Piepoli and Menchov. They proceeded at a steady but wary pace given the grade and the race situation. Serrano and Dominguez got back to them but couldn't stay as Piepoli tried the first of his wicked changes of pace. He immediately put Dueñas in trouble and the Relax-Bodysol rider had to fight and fight over hundreds of metres to get back to the group.
As Dueñas got back, Piepoli went again up, out of the saddle, lifting the pace. Only Valverde and Menchov could stay with him at this point as he drove up the ramps. But Valverde was the first to crack. Was this going to be the end of his run? Menchov stayed there, through hell or high water, on Piepoli's wheel as the gap to Valverde widened and could be counted at 5 seconds with 500 meters to go.
The rest is history! Valverde pushed himself back on to the wheel of Piepoli. Piepoli gave it one last go and as they passed the large inflatable wedge of cheese with not many metres to go he left the Kelme all terrain specialist to take the honours with Menchov challenging all the way to the top.
With only tomorrow's stage remaining and the great difficulties behind them it could come down to a search for bonuses along the road and a stage win if anyone is going to be able to unseat Valverde before the race ends in Burgos. A motivated Saunier Duval rider could do it, they have before, but somehow the big problem remains for whoever wants to try - how to get Piepoli, or for that matter Menchov, across the line at the end ahead of Valverde.
