Nomination made to Jr. Worlds team based on road race
Four new national road race champions crowned in Park City

Saturday's's agenda at the Park City Cycling Festival featured road race action, resulting in four new national titles and one new nomination to the Junior World Championship team. Perhaps the best story of the day was that of Tom Peterson (Snoqualimie, Wash.), who came out of nowhere to have the ride of his life, besting all of the favorites in the Men's 17-18 road race.
The 17-18 men toughed it out for 106km of the wide open course that included several difficult climbs. It was Brad Armstrong (Burleson, Texas) and Blake McMahon (Tulsa, Okla.) who took the early lead, forming over a four minute gap on the rest of the field at one point.
When the peloton closed the gap to under two minutes, Tom Peterson made his decisive move. He successfully bridged the gap, and then continued right through the two leaders. "I caught them so we could work together," Peterson explained after the race. "Then I kept going, and I looked back and they were gone."
Peterson sustained his solo effort for the duration of the race, and at one point had a minute and a half lead on the field. Eight riders broke away from the field and attempted to bridge the gap on the final climb out of the feed zone, but the young rider out of Washington was untouchable. He was not sure if he had the win in the bag, so "I was just going as hard as I could," Peterson commented. "I really wanted to win this race."
Not only has Peterson made a name for himself on the junior circuit and taken a stars and stripes jersey, he has won a ticket to the Junior World Championships in Verona, Italy.
In second place today was Chad Beyer (Peoria Ariz.), and taking the bronze medal honor was Alex Boyd (Oxnard, Calif.)
The talk of the 15-16 men's race was the sensational effort put forth by yesterday's time trial winner Teejay Van Gardaren (Missoula, Mont.). 25 miles into the race, a gap formed with six riders breaking off the front. Van Gardaren was in the lead group. He set an incredible tempo, dropping riders all over the road, as they made their way through a rain storm, and then a hail storm.
Van Gardaren's effort paid off when he crossed the finish line to claim his second national title of the week. Alex Howes (Golden, Colo.) was next, earning the silver, while Daniel Summerhill (Centennial, Colo.) secured the bronze.
The Espoir women toed the line after the 15-16 men for 79km, while the Junior women 17-18 women lined up next for the same distance. The crowd learned of a surprising update in the women's races after both groups had passed the half way point. Several of the junior women passed the group of eight espoirs who had the earlier start.
Rebecca Much (Chicago, Ill.) attacked, and drilled it all alone to secure her second stars and stripes jersey of the week. "On the first climb, I just decided to go up it pretty hard and see how everyone was doing," the winner explained after the race. After passing the older women, Much said, "It was so early, I tried not to get too excited or go too hard too early."
Much finished with a strong lead over her nearest threat - silver medalist Cassandra Osorio-McKenna (Worcester, Mass.), who was the only other junior woman to finish ahead of the espoirs. Making the bronze medal effort this afternoon was Shannon Koch (Flower Mound, Texas). If there is anything Rebecca Much has proved this week - it is that she is a worthy member of the Junior World Championship team. Before heading to Verona, Rebecca is moving to Durango, Colo. to begin her first year at Fort Lewis College.
The women's espoir event saw the eight contestants stay together for the race's entirety. It was destined to be a field sprint for the finish, as Magen Long once again fulfilled her stars and stripes dreams. The silver medal went to Lauren Franges, while Megan Elliott walked away with the bronze. Megan Esmonde and Stefanie Graeter rounded out the podium in fourth and fifth.
