USA Under-23 time trial championships - NEPark City, Utah, August 12, 2004August 12: U/23 Time trial, 36kmFarrar to WorldsBy Kristy Scrymgeour Tyler Farrar rode to victory alongside the Great Salt Lake of Utah today to win the U/23 National Time trial event and earn his spot in the road team for the 2004 Road World Championships to be held in Verona, Italy in late September. Sixty six riders contested the event that was held over 36km of tough rolling terrain in very hot conditions. A few kilometers into the race, riders faced a tough climb on the wide open highway, followed by a long fast descent that curved back down to the lake and continued on rolling terrain and false flats to the turnaround. Perhaps the toughest section of the course was the effort back over the final climb before the 3km descent to the finish. The wind and the heat had picked up in the early afternoon and riders faced a warm headwind coming back to the finish line. Tyler Farrar's impressive time of 44'20.22 was the only time posted under the 45 minute mark in the U/23 category, giving him the win in front of Timmy Duggan (TIAA Cref/5280) and Blake Caldwell (US National Team). Farrar was excited with his win when Cyclingnews caught up with him after the race. "This has made my season," he said. "The course really suited me and I felt great out there." Farrar has been to World Championships twice as a junior, but his win today is enough to qualify him for his first U/23 World Championships selection. When asked whether he could back it up and win tomorrows road race. He said, "The course is a little hilly for me, but I'm feeling good to we'll see."
