Ludovic Turpin becomes another local winner
Big shot Bouyer still in the lead

Who would imagine Ludovic Turpin being able to beat Robbie McEwen in a bunch sprint? That's what happened in stage 2 of the Circuit de la Sarthe-Pays de la Loire. Or not exactly. It looked like a bunch sprint on the finish line, but Turpin actually anticipated the sprint just after passing the 'red flame' of 1 km to go.
"I knew there was a hill before the finish," Turpin explained. "Freddy Bichot attacked just before I did it, then there was a short moment of hesitation in the bunch and that's when I decided to take my chance. The last curve was dangerous but I gave it all there. I looked behind with 200 metres to go and I realised I was going to win. But don't get me wrong: I didn't beat McEwen in a sprint!"
Turpin was delighted. Nonetheless this is only his third win as a professional, aged 29. But just like Franck Bouyer the day before, he is a local, hailing from Laval, 80km away from the finishing town of Montreuil-Juigné near Angers. His parents were there as spectators watching an unexpected action. Turpin was a very late entry to the race indeed. "I wasn't sure of participating in the Circuit de la Sarthe," he said. "I was struggling with a knee problem for a while and it's just going a little bit better since I've put my saddle up a bit more."
It's a well deserved win for his Ag2r team who were away all day with Yuriy Krivtsov, who attacked after only 20km. After doing most of the work and having a maximum lead of 8 min 35 sec, he dropped his only companion Luis Sanchez of Liberty Seguros with 45km to the finish, then he saw the peloton coming across to him only 13km from the line.

"We never got help from anyone all day," yellow jersey Bouyer commented. "Only at the end, when there was some crosswind, teams started accelerating because they were afraid of crashes and splits in the bunch. They did it when I took my responsibilities with 43km to go: at the top of a hill we were just three of us in front of the bunch with Bichot and Allan Davis and I insisted."
That was like a wake up call for everyone. The sprinters entered into the fray but they missed the opportunity at the end. "Tomorrow is their last chance to win a stage in a bunch sprint," Bouyer added. "Stage 3 is harder than what we have experienced so far but less hard than the last one. As for myself, I'm now obliged to start thinking of the final victory, if not for myself I have to do it for my team who did a tremendous job today."
Bouyer himself is more known as a gregario. He had a fantastic future when he turned professional with Castorama in 1995 after a 3rd place overall at the Tour de l'Avenir, aged only 20. "But I never had much luck since and I've quickly considered myself as a domestique", he said. He now has the nicer role of a team leader. Also known as a passionate hunter during the off-season, he's close to a big shot.
