Tour of the Gila - NENew Mexico, USA, April 28-May 2, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Stage 5 - May 2: Gila Monster Road Race, 100/66 milesMoninger takes third win & GC; T-Mobile takes stage and wraps up raceBy Steve Medcroft in New Mexico Amber Neben (T-Mobile) and Scott Moninger (Health Net/Maxxis) wrapped up the Tour of the Gila Sunday, Moninger by taking his third stage win and Neben by marking her most threatening rivals, while teammate Kimberly Anderson soloed in the final 500 meters for a moment of personal glory. The green machineThe men's race had similar dynamics as the women's but would be contested on a much tougher course. At 106.4 miles, the men's Gila Monster took the pack over a Category 4 and a Category two climb before delivering them to the bottom of a Category 1 that led over the Continental Divide and out to New Mexico's famous Gila Cliff Dwellings. Health Net's job was to protect Moninger as long a possible. Should an attack come from a GC threat (Ryan Blickem (Aida's Bail Bonds, 2'18 back) or Davide Frattini (Team Monex, 2'32 behind), Moninger would need to cover it with whatever help his team could give. The Cat 1 climb had been renamed Cima Pantani for the race by organizer Jack Brennan, after hearing about the discovery of Marco Pantani's body in a hotel room in Rimini, Italy. Brennan wanted to pay tribute to a cyclist who, despite his personal demons, may be considered one of Italy's most significant racers so, besides re-coloring the Gila leader's jersey to match the Giro d'Italia's Maglia Rosa, Brennan offered a $300 premium to the first Pro 1 racer to reach the Cat 1 summit in Sunday's stage. Which meant it became the site of the day's first major attacks. "Davide Frattini attacked first," Moninger said. "He put us all into difficulty." "It was hard," Frattini said. "I was close in GC so I wanted to attack, attack and attack." "It took a few turns of the pedals to switch gears for climbing," Moninger said about the chase. Frattini's pressure split the front of the group. Carl Swenson was able to surge near the crest of the climb and take the Cima Pantani prize, then the now-small group or riders formed up on the descent and began to work together. In the group was Swenson, Frattini, Moninger, Health Net teammate Mike Jones and two-time mountain bike world champion Roland Green (Canadian National Team). "Mike Jones was with me," Moninger said. "We had a pretty good working group so there was no need to push it from there." With about two miles to go, "Frattini attacked again," Moninger said. The pace forced Jones and Green off the back slightly and left Moninger to counter alone. "Scott was very, very strong," Frattini said. "He had good form." "[Riding Frattini's wheel], I basically got a free ride to the finish," said Moninger, who won the Tour of the Gila in 2001. "Until about 500 meters. Then I jumped around." The stage win was Moninger's third of the Gila. It put a cap on an impressive and dominating week of racing for Health Net. "It was nice for the team to be able to come here and shine," he said. The win was one of four firsts, three seconds and two thirds for the team. The sureness with which they handled every stage along the way reaffirms the threat they pose in every race they attend this year. And sets Health Net up as the team to beat in the remainder of their calendar. For Moninger, Health Net's stage and climbing race specialist, that calendar includes appearances at the Cascade Classic, Altoona, and the Estes Cycling Classic, after a stop at the USPRO Championships in Philadelphia of course. Pink all the wayGoing into Sunday's stage, the 71.8 mile Gila Monster Road Race, which took the field over one Category 2 and two Category 4 climbs (for almost 5,500 feet of climbing), T-Mobile knew that the biggest threat to U.S. national road champion Amber Neben's GC lead would come from Christine Thorburn (Webcor Builders, 0'51 seconds back) and Brooke Ourada (Victory Brewing, 1'52 back). The strategy called for Neben to watch her closest rivals and be prepared to defend her lead if they tested her. The cat-and-mouse in the pack left room for a couple of opportunists to get off the front. Kate Maher (Basis), who impressed the women's field by holding onto Mari Holden for second in Saturday's Downtown Criterium and was more than eight minutes behind in GC, and Michelle Beltran (Red5Racing), a strong rider who had won a similar last-day stage in La Vuelta de Bisbee in a long breakaway, got off the front together. "After the first sprint," Maher said, "I covered an attack and Michelle Beltran bridged up to me. We got a minute up and just tried to keep it steady." To be safe, T-mobile sent Kim Anderson across when a small chase went after the break. Anderson sat 11th in GC, six minutes back but ahead of any other women now ahead on the road. "It ended up being a group of about six (working to pull back Maher and Beltran)," Anderson said. Ahead on the road, the two-up break had become one when Beltran fell behind. "Somehow I was alone for a while," Maher said. "And then Kim caught on." Anderson and Maher worked together for a while. Until the final climb of the day - the two-mile, uphill finish. "Kate attacked at the bottom of the last climb and I got up to her," Anderson said. "We stayed together to about 500 meters." Anderson then broke free and pressed ahead to take the stage, 14-seconds ahead of Maher. "I was cross-eyed the whole way." The win, with its gap over the main field and finish time bonus, pulled Anderson up to second in the overall classification. With their wins at Gila, T-Mobile showed that they are a force to be reckoned with in domestic cycling. They won four of the five Gila stages and came second in two. If it weren't for Gaggioli's relegation to second in the sprint during the Inner Loop Road Race (stage 3), T-Mobile would have swept the race, dividing the wins between all but one team member. In fact, the only T-Mobile rider to not take a win was U.S. National Mountain Bike Champion Sue Haywood. "All we needed was one more stage in the race," Neben said "Then Sue could have gotten a win too." To which Haywood replied "A stage on a bumpy dirt road." In preparation for the next phase of racing, beginning in June with the USPRO Championships in Philadelphia, the women of T-Mobile head off in different directions after Gila, for training and solo racing efforts. "This was a great race," Neben said. "The team worked really well together. The chemistry is good right now." PhotographyImages by Jason Elhardt/www.jasonelhardt.com
