Tour of the Gila - NENew Mexico, USA, April 28-May 2, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - April 30: Inner Loop Road Race, 73 milesMoninger & Thorburn take windy Gila stageBy Steve Medcroft in New Mexico Under the early threat of rain and snow, Scott Moninger (Health Net/Maxxis) and Christine Thorburn (Webcor Builders) won Stage 3 of the Tour of the Gila Friday. It was Moninger's second stage win in a row and further extended his lead in GC over Drew Miller (Landis Trek/VW). His Health Net/Maxxis team went one, two, and three in the stage. Thorburn was awarded first place after a last-second sprint battle that left her boxed off her line by Lynn Gaggioli (T-Mobile). Gaggioli was flexing her sprint muscles to protect team leader Amber Neben from losing any ground in intermediate sprint and finish bonus times to GC threats. A contested sprintAfter 78 miles of nasty cross and headwinds and aggressive tactics, the women's race ended in a dramatic controversy. Coming into the final stretch, Gaggioli was operating under the explicit rule of not letting Thorburn gobble up any time bonuses so, at 200 yards, the two were seen pacing the front of the bunch. "Then I went too early," said Thorburn. "I don't have the jump (Gaggioli) has." Thorburn seemed to try and bait Gaggioli to make another move by yielding position, preparing to make a huge second effort. Gaggioli came around at about 100 meters then appeared to sit up, looking over her shoulder, maybe feeling she had the entire gap she needed for a safe stage win. Thorburn was charging the inside by then and found herself boxed in. Officials immediately ruled that Gaggioli had impeded. She explained to the judges that she had caught a crosswind and hadn't deliberately swept Thorburn to the curb. The final ruling was that Thorburn was awarded the win and Gaggioli second. It was a dramatic and intense finish to a somewhat calm and controlled day. Neben, who won both previous stages, said that Friday's race was "a tactical day. We wanted Lynn to take the sprint bonuses." Other than that, she said, her team was to police the breaks that other teams would not and get themselves safely to the next day of racing. Only 1:01 behind in GC at the start, Thorburn eyed the two intermediate sprint bonuses as her only practical way to gain time on Neben. "My team was awesome today," she said. "We covered every break. Victory Brewing (team of third-place in GC Brooke Ourada) and Webcor were aggressive. They sent attack after attack." Thorburn contested the first sprint and was edged out by Gaggioli. "Lynn is just so strong." At the second, she decided to conserve energy for the finish. The only kink in everyone's plans for the day came just after the final feed zone when Velo Bella rider Gabriela Gonzales-Ferrat slipped away and built a 30-second advantage. "The Velo Bella rider was off for a while," said Thorburn. The field grew concerned that Gonzales-Ferrat might succeed with so little time left in the race so T-Mobile shut the break down. After that, the drama of the finish was all that was left on the day. The fortunate 50 metersThe men's race had finish-line drama of its own. After 77 of the 80 total miles of the Inner Loop Road Race, the lead group, about 50 riders strong, were together off the final climb of the day. Scott Moninger, eventual stage winner, said, "(Davide) Frattini (Team Monex) threw an attack on the last two kilometers." The move derailed Health Net's plans to setup sprinter Mike Sayers for a stage victory. "I gave it a nudge with about one kilometer to go and got a gap," he said. Moninger's two-second gap held into the final meters and, with a glance over his shoulder, he could see that Sayers and Mike Jones had made pushes of their own and taken second and third respectively. "It wasn't our goal for me to win," Moninger said. "We just planned to keep the status quo. But it was sweet have the team succeed this way." Moninger started the day in pink so Health Net controlled the action from the start. Sayers and former Gila winner Chris Wherry kept the rest of the field in check. But not totally without worry. "There was an early attack on the climb to Pinos Altos," said Moninger. The attacker was Andrew Bajadali (Ofoto-Lombardi Sports), 2:25 down in GC. "He stayed out 40 or 50 miles." "We played a conservation race," Moninger said about his team's management of the gap. After pulling back Bajadali, with help from Landis Trek/VW (the team of second in overall GC Drew Miller) Moninger said, "a few guys were testing their legs in small breaks. But they'd hit the wind and knew they couldn't ride it alone." Which left the field sprinting for the stage win. It's all about SundayWith nothing left before the Gila Monster Road Race but the Downtown Criterium, little shuffling in GC positions is expected Saturday. Both leaders and all of the challengers will have to be cautious and not over-reach in the crit to retain the margins they have earned so far in the race. Because in the Gila Monster, a 106-mile race with more than 9,000 feet of climbing for the men and 72-miles with 5,600-feet for the women, gives plenty of opportunity to make up gaps of even several minutes. The Tour of the Gila will most likely be decided by who has the climbing legs and stamina to make it over the top of Pinos Altos first. For the women, T-Mobile should be able to control the race from here. If they were just one strong rider and a support team, they might be vulnerable to having their leader isolated on attacks on Sunday's climbs but T-Mobile has several riders high in GC and therefore too many options for any other team to be comfortable. In the men's event, Moninger's grip on GC sets up an exciting weekend of racing. His sprint-strong teammates should have fun on Saturday pursuing personal glory in the form of a stage win. As for Sunday, there are still several prominent and fit climbers waiting to take their bite our of Health Net's lead. "Anything can happen," says Moninger, winner of the 2001 Gila. That's just what climbers like Davide Frattini, Drew Miller and Burke Swindlehurst (Navigators) want to hear. PhotographyImages by Jason Elhardt/www.jasonelhardt.com
