La Vuelta de Bisbee - NEUSA, April 23-25, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - April 24: Warren Time Trial, 10.6 milesMiller closes on Frattini; Gaggioli extendsBy Steve Medcroft No sooner had the racers in La Vuelta de Bisbee showered off the grime from Saturday morning's road race than they lined up for an afternoon time trial. At 8.3 miles on an out-and-back and relatively flat course, Lynn Gaggioli (T-Mobile) extended her general classification lead by catching and overtaking Brooke Ourada (Victory Brewing), her 30-second woman. In the men's race, Davide Frattini (Team Monex) lost some of his GC lead to regional star Drew Miller (Landis Trek/VW), who, though he is known as a climber and not a flat time trialist, put in a stunning ride and posted the fastest time. The end results of today's GC reorganization, is that it sets up a great drama for Sunday's Tombstone Road Race. The teams of the leading contenders will have to deliver them to the bottom of the two extended climbs that make up the finish of the race. The first, which comes at 64 miles in the men's race and 42 in the women's, gains 1100 feet in 14 miles and should settle who makes up the final group. After a short downhill, the racers then turn back and run up Tombstone Canyon, the site of the prologue, a 6% switchback. Women With the time trial over and having slipped in GC just behind Suz Weldon (Tamarack/Goldy's), Brooke Ourada (the original GC leader and now third overall) is prepping with her team for tomorrow. "You just don't know what can happen until you get out there," says Ourada of her chances. She knows her team will have to work hard to keep the bulk of the race together. "We were aggressive today (in the morning stage), attacking and attacking." The Fort Collins, Colorado based Ourada said that for Sunday, her team is ready for the challenge presented by the dominant Lynn Gaggioli. But the racer they need to watch just as close, now that results are posted and everyone is able to see the impact of her impressive second-place time trial, is Suz Weldon (who was 2003 Master's U.S. National Time Trial Champion). Men Davide Frattini now sits firmly atop the Bisbee GC even after giving six seconds in the time trial to Drew Miller. The top three GC spots are uncomfortably close. Miller is 16 seconds back. Burke Swindlehurst, who yielded second place on GC to Miller, is only 17 seconds behind Frattini. And lurking in the weeds is Jacob Erker (25-seconds back), who came second in the prologue - ahead of Miller - on the same climb that hosts Sunday's finale. For Miller though, this is all familiar ground. Last year, he sat second in GC behind Viktor Rapinski (Saturn). His team brought back a late breakaway on the run up to the last 20 miles and delivered Miller to the bottom of the climbs. He marked Rapinski (a sprint specialist who suffered in the climbs) and, with Gord Fraser's (Team Health New) help, put Rapinski in trouble. As soon as they reached the base of the final climb, Miller attacked and was able to open enough of a gap to win the overall. This year, Frattini is the rabbit but much less likely to be left behind on a climb. In fact, in just his first two months racing in the U.S., he's been conspicuously present on all the major climbs in the major early-season races (Pomona, Redlands and Sea Otter specifically). Team Monex knows the role they need to play. "We have to keep it together," said Monex rider Karl Bordine, substituting answers for Frattini who is still learning English. "Not let anything dangerous get away and get him to the climb." Bordine says the whole goal will be, if there's a battle to the climbs containing any of the top contenders, to put Frattini right with them. Bordine said he's sure they have the right horse to win though. "Davide's proved he can race with the big guys. Race notes Davide Frattini has been getting quite a bit of notice from the domestic peloton since his arrival in America in March. After a junior career which included winning the Baby Giro (a junior event featuring many of the same tough climbs of the full Giro d'Italia), he found himself a racer without a contract. Roberto Gaggioli, a former Italian pro and long-time domestic crit specialist (and husband to this year's Bisbee women's GC leader, Lynn Gaggioli), invited Frattini to race with him in the U.S. Speaking extremely fractured English, Frattini says he's in the process of settling his sport's visa issues so he can race the entire season with Monex. With, of course, one quick hop home in June to race the Italian National Championships. PhotographyImages by Jason Elhardt/www.jasonelhardt.com
