34th Trofeo Bianchin - 1.6Italy, September 21, 2003Australian Team ReportBy Brian Stephens, AIS U23 Manager With the season coming to an end and the World Championships looming, everyone was keen to perform at the Trofeo Bianchin. The AIS Mapei Aqua Australian team included Gene Bates, Peter Dawson, Aaron Kemps, Dave Betts, David McPartland (normally with Italian Club team Bibanese) and Jon Cantwell riding the last race of his 2 month stint with the team in Italy. The features of the 174km course are a 10km steep climb of Monte Tomba and two 4km climbs before a flat run to the finish Most of the damage was done on Tomba with three of our guys making the front group (Bates, McPartland and Betts). Dave Betts cracked on the next climb and the 30 odd guys remaining in the front group split with Gene making the front half. Italian Under 23 champ, Giovanni Visconti and Ukrainian, Roman Radchenko went clear of this group with the Italian taking the win. Gene went too early in the sprint for 3rd and was swamped to run 13th. Dave McPartland was 23rd.
