23rd Piccolo Giro dell' Emilia - 1.12Italy, September 14, 2003by Brian Stephens, AIS U23 Team Manager Today was the 23rd edition of the Piccolo Giro dell' Emilia near Bologna. The 164km course consisted of an 80 kilometre lap - including a tough climb up to 850 metres - followed by four laps of an 18km loop with a 2km climb each lap. The riders in the AIS Mapei Aqua Australian team were Aaron Kemps, Jon Cantwell, Peter Dawson, Dave Betts and Nick Sanderson. The action started in the first five kilometres with Jon Cantwell in a break of five riders. When that was caught, David Betts went with the next break. Peter Dawson came across alone to this group which by now was seven riders. This stayed clear until two small laps to go. When they were caught, Aaron Kemps went with the next group. The group split the last time over the climb, with Aaron unable to go with the front part. He easily won the sprint for 9th place, with the win going to Alex Gualandi from Promosport.
