Freire holds on for overall as Vainsteins takes final stage

The 5th edition of the Giro di Lucca has been dominated by past World Champions, with Oscar Freire (Rabobank, 1999 and 2001 World Champion) winning two stages and the overall classification, and Romans Vainsteins (Vini Caldirola, 2000 World Champion) taking the final stage today. Vainsteins won a 40 rider bunch sprint in Lido di Camaiore ahead of Ivan Fanelli (Amore & Vita) and Frank Schleck (Team CSC). Freire finished 35th in the same time and kept the leader's jersey.
The final stage was started in Massarosa at 11:30am by the mayor of the community, Fabrizio Larini, in front of 400 schoolchildren from the primary and secondary schools of the area. There were three non-starters: Evgueni Petrov, Marc Wauters and Tom Southam, leaving 96 riders in the race. The first part stage was along the sea front of Versilia before the race turned inland. After 55 the riders hit the climb of Mont Pitoro, followed by the Gombitelli (492m) and the Col de Montemagno, which had to be climbed three times.
The stage was fast from the beginning, with 44.5 km covered in the first hour. An attack by Marco Velo (Fassa Bortolo), Max Sciandri and Luca Pagliarini (Lampre) went after 40 km, with Rafaele Ferrara (Alessio) setting off in pursuit a little while later. On Mont Pitoro, Pagliarini had to let Sciandri and Velo go, and the pair had a 1'20 lead on Ferrara and 2'12 to the peloton at the top.
On the Gombitelli climb, Bartoli attacked the peloton and caught Ferrara, then bridged up to Sciandri and Velo at the summit. The peloton, led as usual by Rabobank, was 1'25 at the top of the climb. A short while later, Alessio Galletti (Saeco) countered and tried to catch Velo, Bartoli and Sciandri, however he was caught by the 80 km mark. At this stage, the peloton was 2'12 behind the three leaders.
On the second climb of Mont Pitoro, Velo was dropped from the leading group, leaving just Bartoli and Sciandri in front. The pair kept a two minute plus lead until km 104, when Saeco and Rabobank started to work together to bring them back. 10 km later it was a more manageable 1'25, with Freire and Popovych doing a lot of work in the peloton.
After the Col de Montemagno, Andrea Peron (CSC) got across to the duo, with the peloton following shortly afterwards. In the final 20 km, Freire kept his place in the leading peloton, and despite another attack by Velo with 10 km to go, some 40 riders arrived in Lido di Camaiore for a mass sprint. This time Romans Vainsteins was the strongest, in front of Fanelli and Schleck. Freire kept the blue leader's jersey, while compatriot Jose Ivan Gutierrez (iBanesto) won the points jersey.
