Stage 5 - September 28: Saguenay - Jonquière, 93.5 km

Kachalka takes challenging stage

By Kristy Scrymgeour

Nataliya Kachalka (Ukraine National Team), outsprinted Olga Zabelinskaia (Russian National Team) at the top of the 1km climb today to win the difficult stage in Saguenay. Kachalka's final effort came out of a five person break away that formed with two laps remaining of the 11 lap race. Race leader, Judith Arndt (German National Team) was not in the break, but had a 3'11" lead on the highest ranked rider in the group to buffer her lead.

The final stage was certainly a challenge, made even more so due to the torrential rain that fell during the race. Riders raced 11 laps of an 8.5km loop which was described by Manon Jutras (Canadian National Team) as being similar to the Montreal World cup. The main climb was 1km in length and the finish line was only 500m past the peak of the climb.

Early in the race Canada's Erin Willock went on the attack and held a solo lead for over three laps. Her efforts were diminished by the determination of the Lithuanian team who chased her down so that Rasa Polikeviciute could attack on the climb. Rasa got a quick gap but Arndt and Bessette were on her wheel. They too were caught but Polikeviciute would not give up. She attacked again on the climb on the next lap, this time succeeding. Willock, having a very strong day, again began to chase, but without any luck. Jutras waited for Willock to get caught and countered her teammates move, managing to bridge to gap to Polikeviciute. Before long another three riders had bridged and the lead group became five riders with two laps remaining. Joining Polikeviciute and Jutras were Karen Bockel (German National Team), Olga Zabelinskaia (Russian National Team) and Kachalka.

The three worked well together and their lead grew to over two minutes by the finish. Up the final climb, Zabelinskaia put on the pace with only Kachalka able to stay with her to the line. Kachalka came around to take the win from Zabelinskaia with Bockel edging out Jutras to take third place seven seconds behind the winners. Polikeviciute came in to take fifth place another seven seconds down.

Behind the leaders for the last couple of laps were Kate Nichols (Australian National Team) and Anna Sipurzynska (Polish National Team). At one point they led the peloton by 35" and managed to hold on to their lead to come sixth and seventh, only seconds before the bunch came in for the sprint. Arndt finished safely in 10th place to keep her lead and win the tour overall.

Cyclingnews caught up with Jutras after the race who was happy with the way she and her team raced. "This is the first time we have raced together and we found that we worked very well. We are pretty happy that we had the opportunity to race together and we are confident now going into the World Championships in two weeks time."
