Yesterday saw the running of the 26th Giro del Valdarno in Tuscany. The conditions were pretty wet at the start and showers continued throughout the day. Representing the AIS Mapei Aqua team was Peter Dawson, Aaron Kemps, Nick Sanderson, Dave Betts and John Cantwell.

The race was on right from the gun, with half the field of 171 starters making it over the first climb and down the treacherous descent in the first group. All the Australians were there until Nick Sanderson started to feel the efforts of the previous day and was dropped after 80km.

Falls and the tough course took its toll and a group of three riders went clear with 80km to go, with two managing to hold off fast finishing Mexican, Moises Aldape Chavez (Sc Centri Della Calzatura). The race was won by Ukrainian Andry Grivko from the Kopstal team. Peter Dawson rode a great race over such a tough course to out-sprint his group and run fifth. Our other finishers were Jon Cantwell in 17th and Dave Betts in 25th place.
