71st GP Fourmies - 1.1France, September 14, 20032002 Results Results Past winners Cooke takes seventh win for 2003Winner of the points competition in the Centenary Tour de France, 25 year-old Australian Baden Cooke, has won the 71st edition of the Grand Prix Fourmies, a UCI 1.1 semi-classic held in northern France last Sunday. Cooke's victory in the GP Fourmies is his seventh for the season, after stage wins at the Tour Down Under, Tour Mediterraneen, Tour de Suisse and the Tour de France. The 200 km race attracted a top flight field, including Paolo Bettini, Robbie McEwen, Mirko Celestino, Ivan Basso and Peter Van Petegem, as well as Cooke and Nardello. A break escaped after 20 km with Anthony Geslin (Brioches) and Peter Wrolich (Gerolsteiner), and 15 km later they were joined by Serge Baguet (Lotto-Domo) and Frederic Guesdon (FDJeux.com). The peloton, led by Lampre and Fassa Bortolo, gave chase however and they were caught before the finishing circuits. The attacks started again once the still big peloton reached the final circuit. Mirko Celestino (Saeco) was particularly active, along with Peter Van Petegem (Lotto-Domo), Paolo Bettini (Quick.Step) and Scott Sunderland (fakta). On the last lap, Celestino attacked and took seven riders with him, including Cooke, Nardello and Wegmann. The gap opened up and Sunderland closed it, with Bettini and Van Petegem hot on his wheels. However just as it came together, gaps opened up in the break again, and Cooke, Nardello and Wegmann were away. In the finale, Lotto-Domo started to ride with two men on the front to bring back the trio, but it was no use and the gap grew to a dangerous 20 seconds. That was all they needed and in the sprint to the line, Nardello and Wegmann were unable to account for Baden Cooke's pure speed, the trio finishing three seconds clear of Cooke's compatriot and former Tour de France maillot vert winner Robbie McEwen (Lotto-Domo). Out of a 70-strong peloton, McEwen won the field sprint for fourth place, outsprinting Frank Hoj (Team fakta) and Gert Vanderaerden (Palmans-Collstrop). PhotosImages by AFP
