Day 7 - September 14: Road Race - Elite Men, Elite Women, Men's U23, U19 Men & Women, Yandina

Aisbett and Bradford take gold in Queensland

Sydney's Leonie Aisbett today claimed the gold medal in the women's road race with Victorian Chris Bradford taking the honours in the men's event at the 2003 Oceania Road Cycling Championships at Yandina on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.

Aisbett, from the Parramatta Club, posted a time of 2hr35min17sec for the 91 kilometre event in which the women raced seven laps of a testing course in hot windy conditions. Aisbett had broken away solo in the early laps and despite the efforts of the chasing group was still clear at the finish. Reigning Australian Criterium champion, Victorian Elizabeth Williams, (Carnegie Caulfield) sprinted home ten seconds later for second place, edging out Queensland's Lorianne Graham (Astra Brisbane.

The men's race was a tough one with less than 20 of the 71 starters completing the 182 kilometre, 14 lap event.

At the finish, Chris Bradford (Carnegie Caulfield) crossed the line in 4hr37min18sec to claim the win in a sprint against West Australian, Hilton McMurdo (Northern Districts). Sydney's Glen Stojanow (Clarence St Cyclery) rode across in third place 24 seconds later.

Sydney Olympic track gold medallist, South Australian Brett Aitken, finished fourth which gave him enough points to maintain his very strong lead in the National Road Series.

The leading contenders had been with a group of 15 riders which attacked early in the race. The field faced two climbs on each lap and ten laps to go the pressure increased and the group began to splinter. On the 12th lap the four leaders attacked on the first climb of the lap and managed to establish a significant lead on the remainder of the field.

Tomorrow from 9.00am to 12.30pm (AEST) the elite, U/23 & U/19 men and elite and U/19 women will contest the criterium titles on the Mooloolaba Esplanade.

Please note winners of the elite category men's and women's time trial and road races at the 2003 National Road Cycling Championships are classified as the Domestic National Road Champion. The Australian Champions were decided in January at the BMC Software Australian Open Road Championships. However the winners of these events in Queensland will claim the Oceania Champion title.
