Day 5 - September 11: Individual Time Trials - Elite, U23, U19, Coolum

Milostic and Safe claim Oceania time trial crowns

Sydney's Peter Milostic has taken out the Oceania individual road time trial on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. Riding for the Penrith Panthers club, 29 year-old Milostic, who is currently ranked fourth in the National Road Series, posted a time of 49min53sec for the 40 kilometre event. The silver medal went to Sydney's Sutherland club rider Geoffrey Cook, 39, in 50min14sec with New Zealander Aaron Strong, 22, claiming bronze in 51min14sec.

"I haven't had the best preparation going into today's event after little sleep last night due to a domestic dispute from another apartment," admitted Milostic. "About five weeks ago, I made the silly mistake of sharing a drink bottle and paid the price when I came down with a nasty virus from it," he added.

In the women's event, South Australian Amy Safe claimed this year's Oceania individual time trial crown after her victory today. In the 30 kilometre event, 27 year-old Safe completed the course in a time of 42min19sec, 25 seconds faster than silver medallist Sydney's Natalie Bates, 23, with Victorian Kathy Watt, 39, a further two seconds back in third place.

Safe, a former international rower, was the 2002 Australian individual pursuit champion on the track and silver medallist in the event this year. Last week returned from three months racing with the Australian women's program in Europe. "I hadn't really targeted this event but was hoping for a good result to finish off my road season," said Safe. "Nat (Bates) and I only arrived back from Italy last week so it's been a bit of a struggle to get back in touch and organised."

Safe's win has secured a place for her in the event at the World RoaChampionships which kick off in Hamilton, Ontario (Canada) from October 8th. The Oceania champion in individual disciplines has the right to compete over and above the usual number of riders qualified by nation ranking.

"I definitely want to go to World's, and if the opportunity is there I'll be keenly chasing it," said Safe. "My goal is still the individual pursuit on the track but this year I had a really up and down early season, so we've been reassessing what's right for me in order to improve my times."

Safe realises her task has been made more difficult by the recent success of Victorian Katie Mactier who on debut rode a near world record time to claim the silver medal in the pursuit at last month's World Championships in Stuttgart. "Katie's ride was awesome - and all credit to her - but rather than make me depressed, it has spurred me on and I'm still determined to persevere," said Safe. "Over summer I'll be working to ride the times I know I'm capable of because if I want to achieve my goal I'll have to ride faster."

Today's course was a flat one ridden in 31 degree heat on the Sunshine Coast motorway between Coolum and Pacific Paradise. "It was dead flat which suited me," said Safe. "We had a tail wind on the two outbound loops, but a pretty fierce head cross wind on the way back so you knew you were working."

Safe says the temperature didn't bother her: "It was absolutely boiling in Italy so the heat wasn't a problem, it was cooler than last week." Safe has been working under the guidance of Australian track endurance coach Ian McKenzie with support from her boyfriend Simon Gillett.

"Macca (McKenzie) is the guru of track endurance and his help and the support of Simon is what keeps me going," said Safe. "Macca believes I should keep doing more road racing to help my track goals and you'd be crazy not to take his advice."

Please note winners of the elite category men's and women's time trial and road races at the 2003 National Road Cycling Championships are classified as the Domestic National Road Champion. The Australian Champions were decided in January at the BMC Software Australian Open Road Championships. However the winners of these events in Queensland will claim the Oceania Champion title.
