90th Giro del Piemonte - 1.1Italy, October 16, 20032002 Results Results Past winners Bertolini's big winAlessio's Alessandro Bertolini scored his biggest win since the 1997 Paris-Brussels by taking the 90th edition of the Giro del Piemonte in a two man sprint with Thomas Liese (Bianchi). The pair, together with third placed Angelo Lopeboselli (Cofidis) pulled off a successful early breakaway, and the bunch led home by Julian Dean (CSC) could only finish within 1'41 of them. The 189 km race began without top names such as Michele Bartoli (Fassa Bortolo) and Oscar Camenzind (Phonak), who no doubt are resting up for Saturday's Giro di Lombardia World Cup race. The first attack came after 18 km by Andrea Masciarelli (Vini Caldirola) who gained 54" lead and took the sprint at Canelli. Perfetto was second followed by Saeco's Cristian Pepoli. Shortly after the sprint, Angelo Lopeboselli (Cofidis) attacked in pursuit of Masciarelli, catching him at the 30 km mark. However the pair did not last long together and Masciarelli went back to the peloton. In the meantime, two more riders attacked to bridge up to the leader: Thomas Liese (at km 30) and Alessandro Bertolini (at km 41). The breakaway was formed and set about building a substantial lead. At the sprint at Cremolino after 68 km, won by Lopeboselli, the trio had 4'40 lead on lone chaser Rafael Nuritdinov (De Nardi) and 6'00 over the peloton. The gaps continued to expand until the break had 9'50 at the 123 km mark (Nuritdinov had been caught by this stage). A number of counter attacks started happening from the peloton at this stage, with Righi, Niermann, Tosatto, Vila Errandonea, Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano, Perez Fernandez and Sabaliauskas all trying to escape and failing. The peloton did finally organise itself to form a chase, led by ONCE and Fassa Bortolo, but it was too late. The gap came down quickly at first (6'15 with 50 km to go) but the leaders still had 5'12 at 30 km to go and that was enough to stay clear. Bertolini and Liese dropped Lopeboselli with 3 km to the finish, and fought out the victory between them. The Italian proved to be too strong in the sprint for Liese, while Lopeboselli finished 49 seconds back for third. PhotographyImages by Fotoreporter Sirotti
