17th Tour du Faso - 2.5Burkina Faso, October 29-November 9, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 8 - November 6: Ouahigouya - Boussé, 128.5 kmBouniot's reward, Sawadogo's despairBy Chris Henry Another victory for France was recorded today at the end of stage 8 of the Tour du Faso, 128.5 kilometres from Ouahigouya to Boussé, as Brice Bouniot (GMCI 38) earned the stage win he's been searching for after several days on the attack. It was celebration for Bouniot, but despair for Mahamadi Sawadogo (Sofitex), who launched a futile solo attack that no doubt blunted his sprint in Boussé against three breakaway companions. Bouniot has already shown his sprinting capabilities in this year's race, claiming second place at the end of stage 6, the same day he won all three intermediate sprints on the road to Yako. The GMCI 38 rider was once again on the attack in stage 8, and this time left nothing to chance, apparently realizing Sawadogo's mid-race solo flyer was doomed before it began. In similar style to most stages thus far, early morning attacks were all covered by the nervous peloton, before finally a group of some of the tour's strongest men emerged. At the 20km mark, points leader Kay Kermer (Marco Polo Cycling Team) set off on the attack with Bouniot for company, along with Sawadogo, and Karel Pattyn (Aliplast). Sawadogo's brother Gweswende (Sifa-Peugeot) managed to join the move, along with Belgian Gunther Cuylits, and the move was set. At the race's halfway mark the break's advantage was established, but at little more than a minute on the field. Not content to work with the group until the finish, Mahamadi Sawadogo decided he would go it alone, and attacked this leading group with some thirty kilometres left to race. It was a suicide move, and another tactical blunder from a man who raised his arms in a victory salute one lap too soon at the end of stage 2 in Ziniaré. By day's end Sawadogo would be compensated with the blue jersey of best-placed African in the tour, but surely he was hoping for the greater glory of a stage victory, only to be overwhelmed by his own nervous energy. Facing a stiff headwind in the final 15 kilometres, Sawadogo's lead tumbled and he was eventually rejoined by the original break. It was not a good day for the brothers Sawadogo, as in the stage finale Gweswende punctured, never to see the sharp end of the race again. Into the finish in Boussé, Bouniot had no problem outmuscling the green jersey of Kay Kermer, and delighted in his first stage win of the tour. The main field, under the usual control of Kermer's Marco Polo teammates in defense of Maarten Tjallingii's yellow jersey, stormed into town mere seconds behind the winning quartet as the hapless Sawadogo held on for fourth. There were no changes of note in the general classification, and Tjallingii moved another day closer to overall victory. PhotographyImages by Adrien Brandon/A.S.O.
