17th Tour du Faso - 2.5Burkina Faso, October 29-November 9, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 6 - November 4: Ouagadougou - Yako, 103.5 kmA day for the BurkinabèZongo gives host nation first stage winBy Chris Henry To the great joy of the fans assembled at the Tour du Faso, Burkina Faso's Laurent Zongo (A.S. Fadoul) emerged victorious in stage 6. Monday's rest day served Zongo well, and the young Burkinabè withstood the 40+ degree temperatures along the route while putting in a strong challenge against the thus far dominant Marco Polo Cycling Team and race leader Maarten Tjallingii. The Dutchman held onto his yellow jersey, but for the first time in this year's race a break formed which, however briefly, showed that victory is not assured for Marco Polo. Even starting the race before 8am could not keep the riders from the heat of the day, but despite the conditions the sixth stage from Ouagadougou to Yako was as aggressive as any, with attacks coming early and often. The first serious move went clear just prior to the first intermediate sprint at Boussé. Seven riders broke the grip of the peloton, and France's Brice Bouniot (GMCI 38) took the first points of the day. Bouniot had for company his compatriot Jonathan. Kern (Alsace), Jean Ibouldo (Sifa-Peugeot), Olivier Keita (Senegal), Desire Kabore (Sofitex), Jospeh Sanda (Cameroon), and the day's eventual hero Zongo. This group quickly established itself as a threat, with a gap that climbed to 4'25 by the third intermediate sprint, won by Bouniot once more (he also won the second) in Arbole at kilometre 74. By this point, Zongo was the virtual race leader, having begun the day just 3'35 behind Tjallingii in the general classification. This detail was not ignored by the Marco Polo team, which quickly took the responsibility to chase the escape. The team's efforts paid for for Tjallingii, as the gap was brought under control and the leaders began to fade. Though his chances at taking the yellow jerseys wilted in the heat, Zongo nonetheless was eager to claim the first big victory for Burkina Faso, and as the leaders hung on to dispute the finale in Yako, the A.S. Fadoul rider showed he had the best legs by attacking under the red kite with one kilometre to go. The move was a success and Zongo managed to hold off the other fast man of the day, Bouniot. Jonathan Kern crossed the line for third with the remainder of the break behind him, while Marco Polo's Kay Kermer completed a successful chase and took the field sprint for 8th place, conserving his own points lead and the overall lead of teammate Tjallingii.
