17th Tour du Faso - 2.5Burkina Faso, October 29-November 9, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - November 2: Orodara - Bobo Dioulasso, 133 kmVan Agtmaal wins alone, Tjallingii holdsBy Chris Henry Dutchman Peter Van Agtmaal gave the Aliplast team its second stage victory today, and kept the spoils in the hands of the Europeans, who have won each of the Tour du Faso's five stages to date. Sunday was the tour's third longest stage, 133 kilometres from Orodara to Bobo Dioulasso, a city where visitors are permitted only to enter the heart accompanied by a local guide approved by the village chief. The day finished with three laps of an exciting circuit of 16km which set the stage for the day's outcome. Maarten Tjallingii of the Marco Polo Cycling Team conserved his yellow jersey without losing any time in the general classification to his closest rivals, Thierry David (GMCI 38) and the Aliplast trio of Karel Pattyn, Steven Thys, and Gunther Cuylits. A somewhat relaxed start gave way to a breakaway of ten riders, who decided to test their legs on the longer parcours. In the move were two of Tjallingii's Marco Polo teammates, American David Washburn and German Kay Kermer, winner of stage 2 in Ziniaré. Van Agtmaal's Aliplast teammate Thys was the only danger man in the group, though he was nonetheless four minutes down on Tjallingii at the start of the day. Other riders included France's Michel Kauffmann (Alsace), Olivier Keita and Elhadji Malick Thiam of Senegal, and Cameroon's Martinien Tega, frequently on the attack in this year's event. The group's advantage never topped two minutes, and the showdown was set for a fast finale as the leaders were caught by the peloton. Into the last kilometres of the finishing circuit in Bobo, a new attack of 14 riders formed. Nervously watching each other on the way to the line, it was Van Agtmaal who used a well timed attack to break clear of his lead group. Behind the main field feverishly worked to minimize the time gaps to the leaders. The Dutchman powered ahead and held off the rest by 10". Three bonifications were available as the field passed through the finish line on the Bobo circuit, but no jerseys changed hands today and Tjallingii received another stuffed lion from race sponsor Crédit Lyonnais for his efforts defending the lead. Three riders were forced to abandon, including Marco Polo's Lionel Syne, who crashed in the final circuit and was perhaps in less of a mood to enjoy the evening's reward, a concert in town.
