17th Tour du Faso - 2.5Burkina Faso, October 29-November 9, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - November 1: Boromo - Houndé, 74 kmDavid wins stage, Tjallingii loses timeBy Chris Henry Still in control of the general classification, Dutchman Maarten Tjallingii (Marco Polo Cycling Team) nonetheless saw a group of four men escape to chip time away from his yellow jersey. Chief among them was France's Thierry David (GMCI 38), who won the stage and held his second place overall, moving to within 1'24 of Tjallingii. Burkina Faso's always aggressive Gweswende Sawadogo (Sifa - Peugeot) remains the best placed African rider in 6th overall, 2'26 down. Road conditions were at times rough along the short 74km parcours from Boromo to Houndé, and the difficult conditions were reflected in a slightly slower average speed, which belied the typically nervous and aggressive racing seen thus far in this year's tour. David's GMCI 38 teammate Alexandre Lecocq was on the attack in the first half of the race, along with Desire Kabore (Sofitex), but the two were unable to create a move that stuck. As has happened in recent days, the more threatening attacks were to come after the intermediate sprints, the first of which was won in Pa by Lecocq, ahead of Mahamadi Sawadogo (Sofitex) and Lionel Syne (Marco Polo). Shortly after, a twenty-strong group formed and broke free of the peloton, including many of the stage's principal protagonists such as David, Syne, Gweswende Sawadogo, D. Kabore, Martinien Tega (Cameroon), among others. As pace increased for the second sprint, David and Sawadogo helped weed out the excess baggage and attacked again to take three more riders with them. David took the second sprint with Sawadogo on his wheel, followed by Tega, D. Kabore, and Karel Pattyn, teammate of yesterday's winner Gunther Cuylits. With the field split into several groups and the second place overall forging ahead in the lead, yellow jersey Maarten Tjallingii found himself caught out by the move. He marshaled his Marco Polo teammates and closed the gap, but the effort came too late to prevent David and Sawadogo from picking up valuable GC seconds. David and Sawadogo both benefited from bonifications, 13 and 6 seconds, respectively, to compliment their time gains at the end of the stage. David's reward was the green points jersey, while Sawadogo regained the blue jersey for best African after a tough stage Friday. PhotographyImages by Denis Descamps/A.S.O.
