17th Tour du Faso - 2.5Burkina Faso, October 29-November 9, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - October 30: Kaya - Ziniaré, 70 kmMarco Polo in controlBy Chris Henry A short second stage saw the Tour du Faso peloton keeping the pace high Thursday as the Marco Polo Cycling Team set out on its first day in defense of Maarten Tjallingii's leader's jersey. The winning time for the 70km stage from Kaya to Ziniaré was 1 hour 33 minutes, and it was again Marco Polo taking the honours as German Kay Kermer won the sprint from a small breakaway group. Tjallingii maintained his lead, but the time gaps are small at the top of the general classification. Aggressive riding was the rule of the day, but despite the best efforts of the three Burkina Faso teams to create a move, Marco Polo was able to control the field. With bonus seconds the reward for the intermediate sprints in this year's race, the GC contenders had to remain vigilant. Eventual stage winner Kermer took the first sprint in Boussouma (km 19), while race leader Tjallingii followed up with the second sprint just 11 kilometres later in Korsimoro. The African teams kept the pressure on after the second sprint, and eventually the winning move was formed. A group of ten, sparked by the Sifa-Peugeot and A.S. Fadoul teams, went clear around the day's halfway point. Kermer latched onto the move as Marco Polo's watchdog, joined by nine other riders: Seydou Sanfo and Gweswende Sawadogo (Sifa-Peugeot), Karim Kabore (A.S. Fadoul), Karel Pattyn (Aliplast), Sadrac Teguimaha (Cameroon), Michel Bilgo (Sofitex), Eric Ahouandjinou (Benin), Kossi Nossi (Togo). The group's lead barely topped a minute and a half, but their effort was enough to stay away until the finish in Ziniaré and maintain this advantage. Kermer showed Marco Polo's colours in the sprint, followed by Sanfo and Kabore. Kermer's teammates Kock Rutger and Lionel Syne led the main field across the line 1'33 back. Sifa-Peugeot's Gweswende Sawadogo moved into second place overall, just 9" behind Tjallingii, and one second ahead of third placed Frenchman Thierry David of GMCI 38.
