17th Tour du Faso - 2.5Burkina Faso, October 29-November 9, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Stage 11 - November 9: Kombissiri - Ouagadougou, 123 kmMaarten Tjallingii, start to finishFinal stage for DietschBy Chris Henry Dutchman Maarten Tjallingii of the Marco Polo Cycling Team completed an extraordinary victory in the 17th Tour du Faso Sunday, wearing the leader's yellow jersey on every stage after claiming victory in the first. Tjallingii proved himself to be the dominant rider of the tour, and even when his lead looked more and more secure in the final days, he showed his class by continuing to ride an aggressive race, witnessed by his second place on the final finishing circuit in Ouagadougou. France's Thomas Dietsch (Alsace) claimed the final stage of the tour, a 123 kilometre finale from Kombissiri to Ouagadougou that focused on a finishing circuit of 7.6 km, covered 10 times. Not only was this year's tour a huge success for Tjallingii, but his Marco Polo team was multi-talented, taking three stage wins between Tjallingii and Kay Kermer, as well as the green points jersey (Kermer) and the pink intermediate sprints jersey, which Tjallingii wrestled back from his teammate on today's final stage. Tjallingii's gap over GC rival Thierry David (GMCI 38) widened to 3'57, while Kermer claimed the third spot on the podium just two seconds behind David. Stage 11 began in typical fashion, with early attacks lighting up the peloton and setting off a series of frantic chases. The first group of note to go clear included Aliplast's Gunther Cuylits (winner of stage 3), who was joined by Lucien Zongo (A.S. Fadoul), Michel Bilgo (Sofitex), Alexandre Lecocq (GMCI 38), Olivier Keita (Senegal), and Attivi Egue of Togo. Eager to seal his overall victory, and perhaps even go one better with a closing stage win, yellow jersey Tjallingii took command of the field and led the chase of the escapees. Mission accomplished for the Dutchman as the six were reeled in, but no sooner was Tjallingii's work done than rival fast men Dietsch (Alsace) and Brice Bouniot of GMCI 38 launched their own series of attacks. The Marco Polo leader had an answer for every attack, and in due time the three men were ahead of the main field. Each of the three took an intermediate sprint, but Tjallingii's points on the sixth lap of the finishing circuit were the most important, giving him the pink jersey back from teammate Kermer, who could still be happy himself with the green points jersey by day's end. As the lead trio continued to pressure each other through the circuit, their advantage only grew over the main field, helpless against such an important move. Although eventually dropping in the closing stages, their lead reached three minutes over the field. As the cat and mouse tactics set in for the final sprint, time was lost but it was inconsequential. Tjallingii and Bouniot watched each other, which was Dietsch's nod to make his own dash for the line. Aggressive until the final crossing the of line, Tjallingii tried to stop Dietsch, but settled for second place ahead of Bouniot. The Burkinabè could at least smile as Seydou Sanfo claimed the field sprint for fourth, but a certain disappointment was evident as their national tour was a showcase for the European riders. Cameroon's Martinien Tega claimed the prize of best African, finishing 5th overall, 4'53 behind Tjallingii. He also took home the white jersey for best young rider. The team prize went to France's GMCI 38, more than two minutes clear of Aliplast from Belgium and A.S. Fadoul from Burkina Faso. PhotographyImages by Denis Descamps/A.S.O.
