17th Tour du Faso - 2.5Burkina Faso, October 29-November 9, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 10 - November 8: Tenkodogo - Fada N'Gourma, 139.5 kmKermer gets second win in photo finishTjallingii one day from the yellow jerseyBy Chris Henry The Marco Polo Cycling Team continues to leave the locals gasping in the Tour du Faso, holding the race lead since stage one, the points jersey, and today claiming the third stage victory. For German Kay Kermer, who wears the green points leader's jersey, it was the second stage win of the tour, but only just. Kermer used a perfectly timed throw of the bike to beat Burkinabè R. Gérémie Ouedraogo (Sifa-Peugeot) in an exciting finale. The tour's penultimate stage traveled 139 kilometres from Tenkodogo to Fada N'Gourma, finishing on a 5km circuit that featured another 3.6km of sandy track. As the tour moves closer to its conclusion, the aggressive riding only gets more exciting. Once again the attacks started at the drop of the flag today, and once again it was race leader Maarten Tjallingii (Marco Polo) who helped create the first splits. Tjallingii went clear with a group of 11 other riders, including his teammate Kermer, and for a moment had his closest rival Thierry David (GMCI 38) on the ropes, having missed the break. David was not to be left out this time, and with the help of three of his Alsace teammates he bridged the widening gap which had quickly shot up to a minute and a half. The lead group roared into Koupéla, where Senegal's Olivier Keita took the first intermediate sprint ahead of Kermer and Seydou Sanfo (Sifa-Peugeot). With the opening sprint out of the way and the next bonus another 32 kilometres down the road, things settled down in the bunch and the leaders were eventually re-absorbed by the peloton. It wasn't long, however, before Alsace's Michel Kauffmann set off on a long solo escape. Ali Sidi Thiam (Senegal) and Jean Ilboudo (Sifa-Peugeot) tried unsuccessfully to catch the tail end of the move, and after lingering between Kauffmann and the peloton, the duo was eventually reeled in. Kauffmann continued his day in the sun, keeping the pack at bay until just 28km to the finish. Not content to wait until the finishing circuit, a new attack was launched immediately by Kermer, David, Ouedraogo, Gunther Cuylits (Aliplast), and Jonathan Kern (Alsace). Only Ouedraogo was without a stage win to his credit, and the royal quintet powered clear of the peloton to dispute the victory on the sandy circuit in Fada. In a frantic rush to the line, with the main field gaining from behind, Kermer denied Ouedraogo entry into the stage winner's club, beating the local rider by just 4/1000 of a second in a photo finish. Kermer took back the pink sprint leader's jersey in the process, on top of
his green points jersey. Thierry David managed to pull back 16 seconds on yellow
jersey Tjallingii, but the Frenchman remains 2'44 behind the yellow jersey with
only the final stage to race. Fans will delight in the 10 laps of a 7.6km finishing
circuit tomorrow in Ouagadougou, where the Tour du Faso began 10 days ago. Tjallingii
looks set to cap an extraordinary start to finish reign in yellow, while Kermer's
green jersey is locked up thanks to his great consistency throughout the tour.
