Clerc upstages O'Grady and Kirsipuu

Swiss sprinter Aurélien Clerc (Quick.Step-Davitamon) has won the first stage of the Tour de Picardie, a flat 157 km sprinter's fest between Beauvais and Cayeux-sur-Mer. Clerc surprised Australian champion Stuart O'Grady (Credit Agricole) and Estonian Jaan Kirsipuu (Ag2r) in the final 100 metres to take his first win of the season and his 12th as a pro.
With no climbs today, the race was ridden at a very high pace from the start, with 44 kilometres covered in the first hour and even more in the next two hours. The beginning was marked by constant attacks, with the most notable being one by 12 riders including Brad McGee (FDJ), Scanlon (Ag2r), Davide Bramati (Quick.Step) and Philippe Gaumont (Cofidis). It managed to stay away for the first sprint in Belleville (km 41), with McGee taking the points ahead of Bramati and Scanlon.
The next attack came at the feed zone, when Christophe Agnolutto (Ag2R), Robert Sassone (Cofidis), Benoit Vaugrenard (FDJ), Stephane Augé (Credit Agricole), Bert De Waele (Landbouwkrediet) and Jean-Patrick Nazon (Delatour) escaped, and held off the peloton until kilometre 110. The second time bonus sprint at km 112 was taken by Jeremy Hunt (Oktos) in front of Gaumont (Cofidis) and Liboreau (BigMat).
The last second of the race was very fast, and there were several more short lived attacks until the sprinters teams closed it down. Quick.Step led out the sprint for Clerc, and he did not disappoint, winning ahead of O'Grady and Kirsipuu at an average speed of over 48 km/h.
"I am extremely happy with today's win," said the 23 year old. "The rest of the team believed in me once more and thankfully I was able to thank them for all of their hard work by winning the race. This is a great team win. I particularly like the Tour de Picardie; I won two stages at the race last year. My objective is that of being able to win another of the next two stages."
