Loda wins stage 2 in front of Steels

Italian sprinter Nicola Loda (Fassa Bortolo) has beaten Tom Steels (Landboukrediet-Colnago) in the second stage of the Tour of Luxembourg, which ended in a bunch sprint in Leudelange. Loda thus added to his team's recent success, highlighted by eight stages in the Giro d'Italia. The overall lead stayed with Thomas Voeckler (Brioches La Boulangère) who won yesterday's stage.
Today's stage was held over 204 kilometres between Wasserbilig and Leudelange, containing five climbs. Three riders attacked after 85 km: Dmitri Konychev (Marlux-Wincor Nixdorf), Karsten Kroon (Rabobank) and Michael Skelde (Team fakta), but were unable to resist the power of the sprinter's teams, who caught them with 10 km to go. The still complete peloton arrived in Leudelange to contest the sprint, with Loda managing to take advantage of the wide open finish to win the stage in front of Steels and Nico Eeckhout.
Notable riders who did not finish today included 1997 winner Frank Vandenbroucke (who did not start), his teammate Servais Knaven, Lampre's Zbigniew Spruch and Maximilian Sciandri, and Latvian strongman Raivis Belohvosciks.
