Stage 4 - May 11: Fayetteville Criterium, 90 minutes + 3 laps/60 minutes + 3 laps

Ivan even better, Gaggioli takes the day and overall

The 90 minute criterium raced today as the final stage of the Joe Martin Memorial Stage Race was not enough to dislodge Jason McCartney (7UP/Maxxxis) from the leader's jersey. McCartney's effort in the 4km uphill time trial yesterday, which he completed in the big ring and was one only three riders to break the nine minute barrier, set up today's overall victory. All he needed to do this afternoon was keep it safe.

The men's criterium was raced over a very technical 1.6km course. Ivan Dominguez (Saturn), John Lieswyn (7UP/Maxxis) and Kirk Albers (Jelly Belly) formed the first substantial break. The pace was too strong however and Albers dropped back and was joined by Brian Jensen (River City Racing) as Dominguez and Lieswyn powered on to lap the field with ten minutes remaining. Dominguez proved his sprinting prowess and easily took the win over Lieswyn. Albers took the final podium spot from Jensen as Eric Wohlberg (Saturn) led the bunch home in fifth place.

In the women's race, Lynn Gaggioli continued the strong form she's had over the last few days and took the win ahead of Candice Blickem (Genesis-Scuba). Gaggioli, defending her leader's jersey alone, covered every move throughout the race. With one lap to go, Blickem attacked taking Gaggioli with her and the two gained eight seconds on the field by the finish line.

"This is the hardest race I've done all year because of all the attacks I had to cover just to defend my lead," an exhausted Gaggioli explained after the race. Gaggioli's victory ensured her overall win ahead of Sue Palmer-Komar (Genesis Scuba) and Amy Moore (Saturn).
