Joe Martin Stage Race - NEUSA, May 9-11, 2003Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - May 10: Fayetteville-Fayetteville, 92/68 miles; 6,000ft/4,500ftGaggioli gags her rivals; 7-Up's McCartney gets 1-up on DominguezBy Kristy Scrymgeour Lyne Gaggioli (Velo Bella) proved again today that she enjoys the Joe Martin Memorial Stage Race when she won the second stage in a three-up sprint finish from Amy Moore (Saturn) and Sue Palmer-Komar (Genesis-Scuba). The three broke away on the 113 km stage that started and finished in Lafayette, Arkansas, putting 2'10" into a chasing group of nine. Gaggioli took the sprint at the line and kept the leader's jersey going into the afternoon's 4km uphill Time Trial. In the men's race Jason Waddell (Mathis Brothers); Adham Sbeih (7UP-Maxxis) and Ivan Dominguez (Saturn) opened up a gap with 35km remainding in the stage. They worked well together and got an amazing 4'30" lead on a chasing group of 12. As the gap started to close, Dominguez, still feeling strong, attacked theother two and soon gained 1'10 on them, having 2'40" on the bunch. Waddell and Sbeih were absorbed by the bunch with 17km to go as Dominguez kept on with his solo effort. It was Jason McCartney (7UP-Maxxis) who made the next move as he attacked the peloton and bridged the gap to Dominguez with 4.8km to go. The two would remain out there until the finish. On paper Dominguez is a superiour sprinter, but it was McCartney who won the duel with Dominguez feeling cooked after his long break away. The two finished 11 seconds in front of the group of ten which included race leader Eric Wohlberg (Saturn). This gave McCartney the jersey going into the TT. "With 3km to go, I was done." said Dominguez. "In the end I just didn't have it in the sprint".
