42nd Rund um den Henninger Turm - 1.1/1.7.1Germany, May 1, 20032002 Results Results U23 Results Past winners Rebellin with final kilometre burstItalian Davide Rebellin (Gerolsteiner) gave himself and his team a win against rivals Telekom, when he attacked inside the final kilometre to win the 42nd Rund um den Henninger Turm in Frankfurt. Rebellin made good use of his sprint to escape the pack, which was being led by Rolf Aldag in anticipation of an Erik Zabel sprint win. The tricky and technical finish helped Rebellin maintain his advantage over the pack, which crossed the line 4 seconds behind him. Zabel did manage to win the bunch sprint for second place, just ahead of Saeco's Igor Astarloa and Rabobank's Oscar Freire. "I profited from the fact that everyone was concentrating on Ullrich and Zabel," said Rebellin afterwards, who played his cards well. "I wanted to win after all the setbacks of the past week, and I knew that Telekom would put everything behind Zabel. At the end, perhaps I had the necessary good luck." Although disappointed at just missing out on a third win in the German classic, Zabel was gracious in defeat. "I'm completely satisfied as last year's winner to be on the podium," said Zabel, who pointed to the rivalry between his own Telekom team and Jan Ullrich's Coast team. "If two fight amongst themselves, the third is happy: that was the situation today. But it is normal that Davide won - he is a great racer." How it unfoldedThe 208 kilometre classic was contested in dry conditions and there were a huge number of spectators who had turned out to watch the Ullrich-Zabel showdown. The attacks started after just five kilometres, when Roberto Lochowski (Wiesenhof) and went clear, chased by Jan Kuyckx (Vlaanderen). The Belgian left Lochowski behind, and proceeded to ride to an eight minute lead, until he was caught by Rabobank's Levi Leipheimer, who took over as the new solo leader and gained seven minutes on the peloton. Leipheimer was chased by Torsten Schmidt (Gerolsteiner), Matthias Kessler (Telekom), Davide Rebellin (Gerolsteiner), Scott Sunderland (fakta) and was caught by them with 58 km to go. The lead group gradually grew in size, but the peloton came back together before the three short finishing circuits in Frankfurt. Jens Heppner (Wiesenhof) attacked on the first lap, managing to hold a small lead over the peloton until he was reabsorbed. Jan Ullrich was prominent at the front, but was closely watched by Telekom, who had Erik Zabel, Rolf Aldag and Alex Vinokourov in the leading bunch - not quite enough to set up a big leadout train. Igor Astarloa (Saeco) kept his nose in front as well, looking for another win after his Fleche Wallonne victory last week. Although he was not afraid to mix it up with the sprinters, it was Davide Rebellin who took advantage of the fast moving but slightly disorganised peloton, attacking hard with 800m to go and negotiating his way around the final few corners to a convincing win. Astarloa tried hard for second place, but was beaten by Zabel, who proved himself to be the best of the rest. PhotosImages by Hans Will
